Nexus 5X Root and Marshmallow

Google yesterday confirmed an event for September 29th, where Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will officially arrive along with the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update.

And as you’d expect from a Nexus device, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P both will be bootloader unlockable via Fastboot out of the box. However, it might take a while before TWRP will be available for the two devices.

For Nexus 5X root though, you may not get root by simply flashing SuperSU zip via a custom recovery. Nope. Nexus 5X will be shipping with Marshmallow and it won’t root with the current version of SuperSU zip.

We know this because none of the Android M developer preview releases were compatible with SuperSU zip and the only way that works for M preview releases to get root is flashing a custom kernel with root baked-in and SELinux set to permissive mode.

The Nexus 5X will face the similar issues with root as Android M preview builds does and unless a custom kernel with root will be available, you won’t be able to root your Nexus 5X.

But the good news is that it won’t take long for the holy folks over at xda to build a custom kernel for Nexus 5X. Also, hopefully, if we’re lucky enough, Chainfire might make a comeback with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and release either a new SuperSU zip that’s compatible with Marshmallow or a CF-Auto-Root kernel for the new update.

This won’t ever happen that you’re unable to root your Nexus 5X, or say a Nexus device as they are meant to be developer devices with no restrictions whatsoever. Even Verizon allows bootloader unlocking on Nexus devices, so no worries.

Also, Nexus 5X will be shipping with Android Pay out of the box, which isn’t compatible with root. However, there are a couple of workarounds to use Android Pay with Root and we’re pretty sure Nexus 5 will be compatible with these workarounds as well. Follow the link below for more info on this:

That’s all the info we’ve for now. We’ll be sure to update this page as and when Nexus 5X Root arrives via a custom kernel or by any other means.

Happy Androiding!
