Next year’s Galaxy Tab to boast 2 GHz Exynos processor

Oh snap ─ I feel sorry for all the poor tablet users out there (Me Included) who impatiently jumped at the opportunity to buy their 1 odd Ghz powered slates this year. After reading this, I was cursing myself. Of course, in the tech gadgetry world, there is always something more powerful or sleeker or more feature packed that is going to be available, as soon as you’ve spent money on a gadget.

Samsung just announced a new System-On-Chip (SoC) processor, the Exynos 5250, which boasts two Cortex-A15 chips clocked at 2GHz and will supposedly double the performance as compared to a 1.5GHz dual-core SoC based Cortex-A9 processors.

In addition to improved processing performance, Exynos 5250 features graphics performance improved by four times compared to Cortex-A9-based Application Processors, supports stereoscopic 3D displays and a display resolution of up to WQXGA (2560×1600). I’m already fantasizing about how my current favorite games – Wind-up Knight & SHADOWGUN are going to look like at that resolution.

Samsung says the new Exynos chip will be used in high-end tablets and will be mass produced sometime in the second quarter of next year.

Quote from the Phandroid article

Whatever happens, it will be interesting to see what kinds of devices are created with these ultra performance, low power processors. The ability to drive higher resolutions should allow devices with larger displays, which could finally turn Android into a full desktop OS. Current versions of the Android OS and innovative devices like the Transformer Prime are close to providing a PC-like experiences, so I could picture a full on Android laptop with Chrome browser and a larger display.

Not to mention, this opens up the possibility of pc & console game developers to seriously consider the tablet market for development of more serious gaming. I’m already drooling.

If you’re having buyer’s remorse, like me, do post your thoughts in comments below :)
