New AUO displays announced: One with world’s thinnest 1mm bezel, and another features 442 PPI 1080p 5″ screen

AUO Displays

Every manufacturer is working hard in an effort to bring out the best display for smartphones – Samsung with Super AMOLED/Super PLS, LG with True HD, or Sharp with their IGZO displays, and each is also working on (or has already released) full HD 1080p displays. Now, another manufacturer is joining the competition, AUO.

AU Optronics (AUO) is working on three new screens for mobiles and tablets. First up is a 4.46-inch 720p display that touts the world’s thinnest bezel requirement at just 1 mm, seen in the prototype image above. Next up is a 4.97-inch display with a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and 442ppi pixel density, made on a low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) process, which the 4.46-inch unit also uses.

AUO is also working on a 10.1-inch display that will go head to head with the much hyped and talked about display on the Nexus 10, with a resolution of 2,560×1,600, providing a pixel density similar to the Nexus 10’s 300ppi density. The 10.1-inch display will use IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) technology and will be just 1.55 mm thin.

There is no indication of when AUO will be launching these displays and when exactly devices will start using them. They are certainly displays worthy of praise though, so let us hope we get to see them in action soon.
