Sprint released the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for its Galaxy Note 3 some time ago, on April 9 to be exact, but if you wanted a Odin flashable firmware for going back to stock, then you were not in luck because the update was available only in OTA form. Thankfully though, the .tar.md5 file of the update is now available, meaning you can use Odin PC software to install the Lollipop update, build no. N900PVPUEOC5 easily whenever you want, to remove custom ROMs, custom recovery, etc or simply unroot the phone.

Guide

Important Note: Backup important files (including photos, videos, etc.) stored on internal SD card of your device, so that in case storage is wiped off, you will have a backup on your PC to get your files back.

  1. Download all three files from above.
  2. Install the latest drivers first of all. Double click the .exe file of drivers to begin installation.
  3. Extract the firmware file now. You can use a free software like 7-zip for this. Install 7-zip, then right click on firmware file and under 7-zip, select ‘Extract here’.
  4. You should get the firmware file in .tar.md5 format after step 3. This is the file that will be loaded in Odin, to be installed on your Note 3 (in step 10 below).
  5. Extract the Odin file. You should get this file, Odin3 v3.10.6.exe (other files could be hidden, hence not visible).
  6. Disconnect your Galaxy Note 3 from PC if it is connected.
  7. Boot Galaxy Note 3 into download mode:
    1. Take out device’s battery. Wait 5-6 seconds and then place it back. Do not power on device.
    2. Press and hold the three buttons Volume Down + Power + Home together until you see warning screen.
    3. Press Volume Up to continue to download mode.
  8. Double click on extracted file of Odin, Odin3 v3.10.6.exe, to open the Odin window, as shown below. Be careful with Odin, and do just as said to prevent problems.

  9. Connect your Note 3 to PC now using USB cable. Odin should recognize your Note 3. It’s a must. When it recognizes, you will see Added!! appearing in the Log box in bottom left, and the ID:COM first box will also show any no. and turn its background blue. Look at the pic below.
    • You cannot proceed until Odin recognizes your device.
    • If it doesn’t you need to install/re-install drivers again, and use the original cable that came with device. Most of the times, drivers are the problem.
    • You can try different USB ports on your PC too, btw.

  10. Load the firmware into Odin. For this, click on the AP button and on the pop-up window, select the .tar.md5 firmware file we got in step 4 above. Make sure you use the AP tab, as shown below.
    • Odin will check the md5 of firmware file, so wait until it does that and firmware is loaded. Don’t worry if Odin gets unresponsive for a while, it’s normal. Binary size will also show up in Odin.

  11. Click the Start button on Odin now to start flashing the firmware on your Sprint Galaxy Note 3 that would update it to Android 5.0 Lollipop, build no. N900PVPUEOC5. Wait till flashing is finished, after which your Note 3 will reboot automatically. You’ll get PASSmessage as show below upon successful installation from Odin.
    • If Odin gets stuck at setup connection, then you need to do steps 6 to 12 again. For this, close Odin, disconnect your Note 3, remove battery, insert it back after 5-6 seconds and then start from step 6 again.
    • Or, if you get FAIL in the top left box, you need to try flashing again, as stated just above.
      Odin 3.10.6 Pass Message Appears
  12. First start of the device may take time, so wait patiently again. Greet Android 5.0 Lollipop when it’s booted completely. Check the Settings > About phone, you should be seeing build no. and baseband updated to N900PVPUEOC5.

That’s it.

  1. I am looking to completely wipe my phone and start over. I have a Sprint Note3 currently running the AICP Rom and am very disappointed with it for a multitude of reasons and just want a fresh start! I do have a couple questions though.
1: will I need to install gapps when flashing this .tar?
2: if so, which version should I install?
3: and most importantly, will I retain or lose root?
4: If I lose root, can I reroot once I’m finished?
I appreciate all your help with this, Thanks.

    1. You won’t need to install gapps again. You’ll lose root and device will be like new. About root, well, pingpong root should work but do check whether this build no. is supported by that root tool, they’ve provided all build nos. supported for various devices.
