Motorola to shut down Chennai assembly facility in February 2013

Ever since Motorola was acquired by Google, the search giant has been busy pulling Motorola out of most markets around the world, specially those where Motorola wasn’t doing well, in order to turn around the latter’s flailing smartphone business.

Motorola had also stopped launching new devices in India after the RAZR and RAZR MAXX, along with 94 other countries including Germany, and now The Hindu Business Line reports that it will also be indefinitely suspending operations at its phone assembling facility in Chennai from February 2013, which is to say the facility will effectively be shut down and stop assembling any further Motorola devices.

Motorola says it will do the customer fulfillment – support for existing customers and inventory management – directly from factories in order to streamline its global supply chain, as it moves out of India and in turn almost entirely from the South East Asia region, excluding China which remains Motorola’s main market.

It’s a shame that Motorola has had to stop operating in so many countries, since lately their Android smartphones have been quite attractive and desirable, though with a focus on a limited number of markets, other aspects such as software updates have taken a turn for the better. And then again, Google is probably doing what it thinks is best for Motorola, so here’s to them achieving seeing their smartphone business starts doing well soon.
