Update [April 08, 2017]: Motorola is now seeding the March security patch to the Indian variant of the Moto G4 Plus. The update goes by software version NPJS25.93-14.4 and brings fixes to bugs and other issues present on the previous build. Before downloading the update, ensure that your device has sufficient charge and backup your important data too.
Update [April 05, 2017]: US based owners of the Moto G4 Plus can heave a sigh of relief as Motorola is finally rolling out Nougat for the device. Coming with build number NPJ25.93-14, the update introduces new features like the new and improved settings menu, a redesigned UI, quick reply from notification shade, improved doze mode, native split windows support along with many other core performance improvements.
Update [February 09, 2017]: Koodoo Mobile from Canada just revealed that they plan to roll out their own Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Moto G4 Plus on February 15, 2017, along with a healthy dose of security patch. We don’t know whether that will be the January patch, or one for the month of February, but given Motorola’s history with that, we won’t be surprised if it’s December patch.
Update [January 19, 2017]: NPJ25.93-14 OTA update is rolling out for Moto G4 Plus devices which were already on Android 7.0 build, NPJ25.93-11. The update installs the December security patch, while fixing the issue with notification tone and improving stability of the system. The update is available for download here.
Update [January 10, 2017]: Motorola Germany twitter handle just confirmed Android 7.0 Nougat update release for Moto G4 Plus in the country. The update will be rolling out by the end of January, 2017.
Update [December 08, 2016]: The Moto G4 Plus now has a stable Android 7.0 Nougat update available in India, as build NPJ25-93.11. It’s expected to arrive for long time, as the soak test for the device was started in Brazil going back as much as mid-October. While, Motorola released the 7.0 update for Verizon Moto Z Droid sets about 20 days ago. The G4 plus Android 7.0 update packs in little else than the Nougat features themselves, as only Moto Actions sees a feature update to allo you to swipe to shrink screen size (UI).
Update [November 19, 2016]: The 7.0 update seems to be out for the Moto Z Droid and Z Droid Force in USA, where these two devices are Verizon exclusive. The soak these for the Z Droid was started around the same time as Moto G4 soak in Brazil, so it’s pretty reasonable to expect the Moto G4 Nougat update to release shortly too. But not like that, when Motorola announced it on their software update page for G4 that the update is live in India, only to be denying the update later on. You can find the full story below.
Update [October 22, 2016]: Here’s a confirmation from Motorola India, that Nougat is not yet released in India. A screenshot of their tweet is below.
Update [October 22, 2016]: It seems that someone at Motorola jumped the gun prematurely by announcing the update at company’s software update portal. Because, the forum moderators at Motorola are having none of it. Yep, they are declining the release, which looks reasonable too, as we’re yet to see anyone from India post a screenshot or any notification regarding the Indian Nougat update.
Take the Brazilian Nougat soak test for example. Within hours, we had the OTA available for download (lookie below), along with tons of screenshots from people. But we too having wondering about the Nougat update for Indian Moto G4 users — there isn’t a software version available yet other than Brazilian build. Look at the pictures below where Mods are bluntly denying the release of Android Nougat update for G4 and G4 Plus in India.
1. Dated: October 20, 06:15 pm (the day Moto announced it)
2. Dated: October 21 03:09 pm (a day later, Motorola Mods deny the rollout)
3. Dated: October 21 07:04 pm (some logical explanation by Motorola Mod)
4. Dated: October 22 07:36 pm (this is hours ago, complete denial)
So, what do you think?
It looks clear to us that the update hasn’t actually released in India. Let’s whether the update starts actually rolling out for Indian Moto G4 users before Diwali — country’s biggest festival — on October 30. As this would be quite an amazing present for the Moto fans in the country.
Update [October 20, 2016]: The update is official in India for both the Moto G4 and G4 Plus. We don’t have the full changelog and software version with us yet, but keep an eye on this page for that as we will be sharing it once we get it. Moreover, we are hunting for the OTA download already, so that you have the opportunity to download it right away without waiting for Motorola to push the update to your device. Till then, you can already download the soak test version of Nougat from below, which comes from Brazil and works for all languages.
Update [October 20, 2016]: The Moto G4 Plus Android 7.0 Nougat update is already available for download. Yes, see the screenshots below which confirm that this OTA, a soak test version BTW, is Android 7.0 build, updated to October patch. The full software version is Blur_Version.24.31.64.athene.retail.en.US.zip. Click here to find the download link and installation guide, given below. The list of supported devices now includes model nos. XT1643, XT1640, XT1642, XT1622 and XT1626. Yes, it’s been tested on all of these.
Update [September 27, 2016]: A Motorola spokesperson has confirmed that they plan to release the BIG Android 7.0 Nougat update in Q4. So, before you get to welcome year 2017, you will be rocking Nougat!
Happy you are, right?
And we wouldn’t call Q4 release — even if it’s December — any late, because we’re talking a mid-range device here. We’re sure not too many Samsung, HTC, Sony and LG sets in this range will be running 7.0 update by Q1 2017 end, let alone this year’s end, but Motorola’s G4, G4 Plus and G4 play will. That’s cool!
Update: Sprint just made the official announcement of its own too, bringing us more of changelog to feast our eyes on, only that there is nothing interesting therein as we already know about it totally. In US, the rollout begins on August 31, and would be done by September 16. The update is sized around 520MB.
A new update is out for the Moto G4, carrying the build no. MPJ24.139-64. The update brings July security patch level, and fixes bugs to bring more stability to system. That’s all about the update.
Right now, the Android 7.0 Nougat update is the talk of the town in Android blogosphere. Since the release of Nougat for Nexus devices on August 22, we’re receiving lots of questions about Android N update for various devices, and of them whose name frequently comes up is Moto G4, along with its twin G4 Plus.
Today, a developer has started working on the AOSP build to bring the Android 7.0 update to Moto G4 Plus. If this happens soon enough, then the unofficial update will be available before an official one, as we’re yet to hear anything about Nougat update timeline from Motorola.
You can find the development page over here. The ROM isn’t available for download yet, but some code-playing is already in work. If you want to install the Nougat update before the official one comes, then do keep an eye on that page.
Android 7.0 Nougat release date for Moto G4
Expected release date:
October November 2016.
Update [October 22, 2016]: Motorola forum moderators are denying the update every started rolling out in India. It seems the official announcement went live prematurely. But, the Nougat soak test for G4 Plus in Brazil is a real deal, and we hope that once that is finished, Motorola released stable an final build of Nougat for Moto G4 and G4 Plus, in India and world over, by mid-November.
The first Motorola devices to get Nougat update would be Moto Z and Z Force. But the G4 sets should follow them both sets for the Android 7.0 update for definite, and soon too, because there’s isn’t much to customize for the Moto software team between the two devices.
The company has released software updates pretty quickly earlier too — Moto G3 received the Marshmallow on December 24, 2016, which is almost two months before Samsung’s flagship device in Galaxy S6 got it (February 15, 2016). That’s incredible, right? A mid-range device from Motorola scoring the big update before the Samsung’s — or Android’s — best device.
That’s why we think Motorola wouldn’t too much time in pushing out the Android Nougat update for its Motorola G 4th Generation sets.
Android 7.0 Nougat release date for Moto G4 Plus
Update [October 22, 2016]: Read the updated text above for Moto G4 please. Expect the update to hit rollout phase by mid-November.
Update [October 20, 2016]: As we predicted, the Moto G4 Plus Nougat update is indeed available for download in the month of October 2016. Though, it’s not the stable release we’re hoping for, but a test version. Anyway, if you want Android 7.0 now, you can have the it.
Release status: Expected release date is
October November 2016. Test build available!
The Moto G4 Plus should be receiving the Nougat update with its sibling, the G4.
The devices are pretty similar, and even share the same codename even though they come with different model no. series. But all in all, the update should arrive simultaneously.
Why Motorola can roll out Nougat update quickly?
Because Motorola trusts Google’s stock Android UI and doesn’t shames it with custom skin like LG and Samsung do, it doesn’t have to tweak its custom skin to being it in line with the Android OS, in this case 7.0 Nougat.
Motorola can simply take Google’s code and optimize it for the device, without spending too much time on fine-tuning the UI of custom skin because it doesn’t have one — while other OEMs spend a good chunk of time doing exactly that rubbish.
