List of phones that receive regular Android security updates

There are thousands of Android smartphones in the market today, but not everything gets regular Android security patches. Google releases security patches every month, and it is the job of the OEMs and carriers to deliver timely updates to the users.

However, according to Google, only a handful of smartphones get these security updates on a regular basis. A test conducted by the search giant looked at data from Play Services and checked for devices that ran October security patch or later in the month of December.

Google’s list mostly included Nexus and Pixel devices, which isn’t surprising at all. And these are the smartphones that received the 60 to 95 percent update rating.

  • Google Pixel
  • Google Pixel XL
  • Motorola Moto Z Droid
  • OPPO A33W
  • Nexus 6P
  • Nexus 5X
  • Nexus 6
  • OnePlus 3
  • Samsung Galaxy S7
  • Asus Zenfone 3
  • bq Aquarius M5
  • Nexus 5
  • Vivo V3 Max
  • LG V20
  • Sony Xperia X Compact

The Vivo V3 Max and the OPPO A33W are mid-range devices that did really well in the Chinese market. It is good to see that Vivo and OPPO are delivering timely updates for these devices. The list also shows that companies like HTC, Huawei and Xiaomi haven’t even made the list. Even Sony, Motorola, LG and Samsung had only one device each in the list.

There are several best selling smartphones that aren’t included in this list, which is a shame to be honest. Anyway, Google says that they are currently working with OEMs and carriers to make the update process faster and better.
