How to Root LG V10

It has only been a month since LG released the V10, and we already have root access on the device. Thanks to the TWRP recovery build by KAsp3rd, using which you can simply flash Chainfire’s SuperSU zip and get root.

Root access gives you system level privileges on your Android device. With root, you can modify any system file on your device, without any restrictions. But know that modifying system files could potentially hard/soft brick your device, so be careful root access.

Rooting LG V10 root is pretty easy. You just need to unlock the bootloader, fastboot flash TWRP recovery and then flash the latest SuperSU zip from Chainfire. Follow the detailed guide below (with links).

How to Root LG V10
  1. Setup ADB and Fastboot on your PC.
  2. Enable Developer options on your LG V10: Open Settings on your device » select About phone » scroll to the bottom and tap on Build number seven times.
  3. Enable OEM unlock and USB debugging on your LG V10 from Settings » Developer options.
  4. Connect your V10 to PC and issue the following command to boot into bootloader mode:
    adb reboot bootloader
  5. Once you’re in bootloader mode, issue the following command to unlock bootloader on LG V10:
    fastboot oem unlock
  6. Once bootloader is unlocked, reboot the bootloader mode with the following command:
    fastboot reboot-bootloader
  7. Download and install LG V10 TWRP recovery.
  8. Flash SuperSU via TWRP and get root.

That’s all. Enjoy root access on your LG V10.

  1. Having problems getting ADB to work with the V10 currently. I’ve downloaded and installed the Android Studio platform (and checked the SDK Manager to make sure that the USB Google drivers were installed), and ADB doesn’t see the device. I have made sure that I’ve activated Developers Options (the 7-tap of the build), and checked off USB Debugging. Wondering if it has something to do with Window 10. Gonna try installing Android Studio on a laptop with 8.1 on it and see if that gets me anywhere.

Thanks for the article though. I appreciate it 🙂

    1. Make sure you change the usb connection settings from MPT to PTP. That will take care of it, and ADB will recognize the device.

      1. Did that, no change. Adb doesn’t seem to be able to recognize the device.

  2. I don’t have an “OEM unlock” in my developer settings…

    1. Which version of the V10 do you have Nick? I believe that only the T-Mobile version (H901) allows the bootloader to be unlocked.

  3. When I get to the “fastboot oem unlock” stage cmd just shows waiting for device ad infinitum. I believe I have followed all the steps correctly, and this happens using either version of adb in the install link provided under the first step. I am using a T-Mobile V10 tethered to a Windows 8.1 laptop.

    Thanks for any help provided!

  4. I’m running into an issue with the fastboot command also. It just sits at . I’ve tried 3 different LG drivers and they all load up the v10 (LG h901 varient) in the device manager. “adb devices” all show the phone as a device, but when I try “fastboot devices” it doesn’t see anything. Any suggestions?

  5. Will this still work with the marshmallow update

  6. It will delete my data?

  7. been told i should NOT use TWRP Recovery with an H900 (AT&T), that it’s only recommended for H901 (T-Mobile).
also,i got stalled at “waiting for device” as others have mentioned.
any additional advice for AT&T V10s?

    1. Hi Beth, from what I understand (and if the facts have not changed in the past few weeks), bootloader unlock / TWRP / root only works with the T-Mobile H901 variant. I’m actually an AT&T customer but went out of my way to buy the V10 from T-Mobile. I bought the phone outright along with a $40 prepaid plan. Then I made and received some test calls over a few days from the T-Mobile phone, and on the 4th day I called T-Mobile saying that I am traveling abroad and need the phone to be carrier unlocked to use with my European SIM. So at that point I was able to unlock the device to work with my AT&T SIM and I then proceeded with a full bootloader unlock and TWRP / root. I don’t know if any of this will be of help for you, but this info is out there if you search around. Maybe you can return your AT&T phone if it’s within the remorse period and just get it from T-Mobile? Best of luck!

      1. Oh, and just to add, if you do pursue this route, be sure to install Titanium Backup Pro immediately after root so you can Freeze all the T-Mobile and LG bloatware. Will make your device run incredibly smooth. I also love Greenify as a root user.

  8. Steps 4 thru 6. Enter these commands….where? On what device? Which program? Something is missing here.

  9. Thanks a lot, this complete wiped my phone!! WTF would you not put this as a disclaimer in BIG BOLD TEXT somewhere in these instructions!!

  10. THIS WILL RESET YOUR DEVICE, BACKUP YOUR DATA

  11. Did anyone ever get this to work with the V10 H900 from AT&T? I also have the oem unlock in the developer options. The Tmobile version isn’t an option for me. Can’t seem to find anything on Google about the AT&T version working. I miss root. My old phone was so modified with custom firmware and what not. Now I feel like my phone is soooo…..Official. It’s very limiting :(.

  12. I’m having trouble with the command part after I plug my v10 into my computer how do I do the adb reboot bootloader on my computer or the phone?

  13. SD card not recognized now after running this root. Any ideas to get it to work again?

  14. Hello,

Is there a way to un-root or reset back to factory settings? I have Jump-OnDemand with Tmobile and want to be sure the phone could be reset back to factory, no root, if i want to switch phones.
    Thanks!

  15. Yes, hello. I got to the fastboot oem unlock step, and the command console just got stuck on waiting for device. What do?

  16. it says that the twsp recovery is not mounting correctly any advice

  17. i dont know what to do i tried to just continue the process and it is saying that device cannot be found when i put in the command adb reboot bootloader im stuck not sure how to continue
