We know Samsung is already working on the Galaxy S4 for a release next year, keeping with their tradition of releasing a new flagship Galaxy smartphone each year. Now, it seems LG has decided to follow suit, as rumors about the specs and release date of the LG Optimus G2, successor to the only recently released Optimus G, have come out.

According to the rumors, the Optimus G2 will sport a quad-core Snapdragon processor running at 2.0GHz – 2.5GHz (possibly¬†MSM8974)¬†and a Full HD 1080p display around 5-inches in size, and will run on Android 5.0 (Key Lime Pie if you will). The Full HD display is something that will no doubt be included, considering devices like the HTC Droid DNA already have 1080p displays, but whether it really runs a 2GHz processor and Android 5.0 is up for debate, though LG is always welcome to surprise us. Oh, and we can also expect a 13 megapixel or higher camera and 2GB RAM, without which I don’t think a flagship device is going to be called a flagship in 2013.

As for the release date, the Korean media is reporting that LG had previously decided to launch the Optimus G2 in the second half of the next year, but will launch the smartphone in May instead if they face stiff competition from other manufacturers, which I’d say is inevitable if the rumors about Samsung’s Galaxy S4 turn out to be true.

Of course, at this point, these are only rumors, but 2013 is surely looking to be a year when we will see devices sport some really out of this world specs, and LG is no doubt looking to be right up there at the top, spurred by their recent focus on launching top of the line smartphones and improving their reputation in the market.

Will you be interested in buying the Optimus G2 instead of the Galaxy S4? Do let us know in the comments.
