LG may be getting ready to enter the CPU market, with an initial line of in-house produced chips that it may unveil at CES 2013. A report from the Korea Times indicated that LG may be stepping up its in-house chip production to develop CPUs for its web capable Smart televisions, to start with.
LG’s first chip will supposedly be called the H13, where the H indicates home entertainment and the 13 indicates the 2013 which is the launch year for this chip. The chips will be manufactured by TSMC or Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, but will be marketed as and carry the LG branding.
Another interesting bit of news on LG’s chip foray is that a mobile version of the H13 chip is close to the final stages of development. This version will also be manufactured by TSMC, but there is no information at this point whether we will see it at CES 2013. In any case, is this is true, then it will definitely make LG more independent as far as key parts for its products are concerned.
Looks like LG has taken a lesson or two from the Apple run-in with Samsung on the processor chip front, and is determined to reduce and eventually eliminate dependency on others as far as CPUs for it’s own products are concerned.
