As most of you may already know, Huawei has been fighting a court case against Unwired Planet — a US-based company formerly known as Openwave for a while now. It looks like the case has almost come to an end as High Court of Justice of England and Wales ruled against Huawei.
In other words, Huawei, the third largest smartphone maker in the world will have to pay patent royalties to the company unless it wants a sales ban in the UK. What’s more, according to the High Court’s ruling, Huawei has to pay royalties to Unwired Planet for every smartphone it sells irrespective of the country. Yes, the ruling applies not only to the UK but all the countries around the world.
Huawei, in all its likelihood, will appeal against the ruling arguing with the High Court to exempt it from paying royalties on international sales.

Just in case you are wondering, Huawei will have to shell out anywhere between 0.032 and 0.064 percent of each smartphone’s retail price. Now that may not look like a huge amount initially. But, taking into consideration that Huawei is the third-largest smartphone vendor in the world, the money would add up to a significant amount.
Also, the fee varies based on region. For instance, in China, Huawei will have to pay lower than what it pays elsewhere.
