Huawei Summit available at T-Mobile for Price of $49. Appears to run on Android, but Tmo calls it proprietary!

Earlier today, we wrote about a leaked list of upcoming T-Mobile phones, which revealed the pricing  for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The leaked list also included a phone from Chinese telecom giant Huawei, called the Huawei Summit, priced at $49 with a standard 2 year contract. The pricing, and a little amount of calculated guesswork made everybody suspect that this was a mid-range Android based smartphone.

Now the Huawei Summit has made a landing on TMO’s website, and there is no reference to Android or any of Google’s various services that come integrated with even the most basic of Android handsets, like Google Play for example. In fact the feature list on the product page states that the Summit runs on a proprietary operating system. The presence of integrated Swype though, indicates  some mysterious connection to Android. And so does the pronounced Android look to the interface. It is probably a proprietary OS, which uses an Android base. Check out the screenshot below from the Huawei Summit product on TMO’s website:

The Huawei Summit does come with quite a few decent features for a mid-range phone. Here’s a list of the key ones:

  • 3.5 inch HVGA touch screen
  • 3.2 MP rear camera
  • 3G and Wifi enabled / Wifi Calling
  • Pre-loaded Swype keyboard
  • GPS
  • Stereo Bluetooth
  • MicroSD card slot
  • 1400 mAh battery

One good thing that the Huawei Summit has managed to do with its modest feature set and specs, is to be able to take away the attention from all the Nexus 7’s and Optimus G’s of the world, albeit for a short while, when everyone was going nuts trying to figure out what it packed under the hood. And for a midget sized budget device, that is no mean feat. We hope it does as well, once released.
