Huawei Nova 2 and Nova 2 Plus doesn’t support 5GHz WiFi

The Huawei Nova 2 and Nova 2 Plus both launched today in China. With competitive price tags, both devices are bound to attract users interested in having a premium experience. But corners are always cut when designing a device to fit a certain price segment. Though it’s a very tiny omission, the Nova 2 and Nova 2 Plus only feature 802.11b/g/n, 2.4GHz WiFi.

What this basically means is that you’ll only be able to use the 2.4GHz spectrum when using your WiFi. In comparisson, 802.11ac provides the 5GHz band which is commonplace in almost all current flagships. If your ISP support faster internet plans, then the 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n WiFi on the Nova 2 and its sibling will bottleneck download and upload speeds to an extent.

To be fair, real world differences in speeds are only noticeable once you crank up your internet plans to above the 600mbps mark. But then again, it will take a good amount of time till gigabit Ethernet becomes affordable to the public, so I guess we can make this an exceptional case.

The Nova 2 and the Nova 2 Plus from Huawei are otherwise excellent smartphones in their own class. Huawei is currently preparing to launch the flagship Honor 9 at IFA Berlin, with the device making a recent appearance at TENAA.
