How to install Google Assistant on Galaxy S6, S5, Note 4 and Note 5

Google seems to be playing the long game when it comes to its beloved Google Assistant. When they first announced the Pixel series, the Google Assistant was termed as an ‘exclusive’ feature for their trademark devices. Soon reports started pouring in that LG G6 will come as the first non-Pixel device to include Google Assistant. Fast forward to the MWC, the search engine giant finally decided to release Google Assistant to all Android users running Marshmallow and above. The Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches will also be receiving the Google Assistant, although its level and limits of functionality are unclear at the moment.

After the hype regarding the announcement subsided, people were left wondering about the time they would need to wait for the update. While it is no secret that you can get Google Assistant on your Nougat device provided you are rooted (editing Build.prop file).

If you feel that rooting is not up your alley and still want the best Google has to offer, we have prepared an extensive guide for you. No root is required, all you need to do is to read the instructions carefully and you will be running Google Assistant in no time.

Pre-requisites: Your device must be running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or above versions of Android.

  1. No assistant!

    1. Google beta program for Google play services. Sign up for that and restart your phone or wait for update to beta in Google play. I had to download the Google app alpha version first then restart my phone. Go to the play store and download available upgrade and then the assistant was there.. only problem it doesn’t work from lockscreen.

  10. It’s a server side switch. None of this will “Install Google Assistant” . Only Google can make that happen.

  12. If your phone is rooted, go to Play Store and search for ‘Get assistent’.

    1. You do nothing. It’s a server side update. Google has to enable it in your country and then it will work.. (that’s what I know but I may be wrong)

  15. Can it be installed on ported custom rom?

    1. Yes it can. Feel free to try the above steps for your device

    2. Kanav, can you re-check your links, the process wasnt too difficult, i cant imagine everyone is getting it wrong. The facts seems to suggest the steps and links do not give the result promised in your article.
Ive followed everything and double checked the steps

Can you give us a follow up by addressing the points above

How long should we wait for point 4 above, a few hours of a few weeks?

    3. hey zc, could you provide me with you device info? (device name, android version) . While I understand a fair share of people are unable to get the desired result (OnePlus 3 running Nougat ), I’ve been successfully able to ‘update’ to Google Assistant. It seems that although you can update your play services and Google App to the latest beta, the change is server side in nature. Unless Google recognizes your device model, you may not be eligible for it. Also, if your device is rooted and you are running Nougat, go to the Play Store and download ‘get assistant’ or edit your build.prop file. Both give the desired result immediately

  38. This is click bait at its finest. You can’t install GA, it has to be ‘enabled’ by Google. If you followed these steps and magically got GA then it was a coincidence, it was just time for your device to get it. If you read the instructions it clearly says that the last step is to wait, that should tell you something.

  47. Currently we need to change our location to united states and clear cached data and it will work. For changing location you can try some apps which convert your IP address from your country to United states and then system will read your location as united States and you will get your deal. Thats it for now.

  59. I’m from the Uk, I have Google assistant on my S6 & S7 but for some reason it didn’t work on my s7 edge. The only other downside is that it speaks in a American accent and American units or measurements when trying to find out information

    1. I read on another forum to change the phone’s language to English US., clear the cache and data in the Google app (under Storage in the settings) then press and hold the Home button. I did all this and to my shock it worked. I’ve even changed the default language back to UK English and it’s still working. Hope that helps someone
