[Hack] Remove Update Notification on Galaxy S2 ICS Firmware Leaks

If you’ve flashed one of the Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 based (leaked) firmwares on your Galaxy S2 I9100, you’ve probably run across the irritating ‘Update’ notification in the status bar, that refuses to go away no matter what you do. It cannot be setup, as you may already have tried  more than couple of times, and you simply can’t swipe it off, like you do other notifications in there.

Well, there is an app hack for that. By freezing the system app responsible for that, you can actually disable it permanently. You do need root access in order to do that, so first root your current firmware (search this site for your phone’s current build number).

Then follow the quick and small guide we have her below, which will show you how to disable this notification for good.  Read on to find out how.

Step by Step procedure

  1. Install the free app ROM Toolbox on your phone from -> here. (Or open the Market on your phone, search for ‘ROM Toolbox’, and install it).
  2. Open the app on the phone. Press the ‘Allow’ button when it asks for root access.
  3. Now, click on the button that says ‘App Manager’. This will load a list of all the apps installed on your phone.
  4. Next, click on the ‘All Tabs’ tab at the top of the screen.
  5. Scroll down to the entry that says ‘Device Management’. Long press on it, then select the ‘Freeze’ option.
  6. Reboot your phone.

That’s it, this will ensure that you never get that annoying update notification again. Share your thoughts and problems in the comments below and we’ll do our best to help you out.

  1. I remember after I flashed ICS onto my GS2 that it was in the notifications bar, but I simply tapped on it and then attempted to “update” (I knew it would not work) but after it told me it couldn’t it disappeared anyway. Problem sort of solved itself. Anyone else have that happen?

    1.  Nope 🙁
But what Hiernu suggested worked 🙂

  4. I could not find “device manager”, but i could simply find two instances of “software update”. I have uninstalled them through ROM Toolbox and now do not have any “software update” message anymore, problem solved.

    1. Cool. Thanks for letting us know, will update the post above with our info.

    2. Infact you only need to freeze the “software update” that has a green rectangle icon. The one with arrows that look like the notification is a decoy I guess.

  10. Mine s i9100G.. i went to settings -> about phone -> software update. all of a sudden it started updating without a confirmation . i cancelled it and post pond it 7 days later. and this stays in my notification bar forever. i wanna remove it. i don wanna update. pls help

    1. Try this, go to settings and find the update section there. See if there is anything such as ‘do not notify me about updates’ or anything. If you have rooted your i9100G on Android 2.3, you can install ROM Control app (it would need root access to work) and then freeze the update service of Samsung, which will remove the notification.

But, I think you should go ahead with the update. Android 4.0 is pretty good update, kind of must-have.
