Google targets Viewdle, for its work in Face Recognition tech

Google loves to go out and buy other companies to help in improving their existing products, and the latest rumor suggests that Google may have purchased Viewdle, a software company that is known for its work in facial recognition and augmented reality technology.

The most probable cause for this buyout that comes to mind is that Google wants to improve the face unlock feature on Android 4.0 and above, which allows users to unlock the device using their face as the password, but is something that can be fooled with a bit of trickery. It could also be, as Quentyn Kennemer of Phandroid suggests, for an automated tagging system for Google+ and Picasa, similar to what Facebook does with uploaded photos.

There’s no official announcement or proof that the purchase of Viewdle really did take place, so take this with a pinch of salt. Any ideas on why Google would want to buy Viewdle? Google being Google, there’s a lot more that Google may have up its sleeve, so let your imagination run wild and let us know!
