Google Maps 5 brings Offline Maps, 3D view and New Compass Mode

Google Maps 5

In case you still haven’t spotted that ‘update’ for Google Maps, be sure to check your downloads tab in the android market on your phone. the ever-favorite Google Maps has just grown old to version 5.0.

Google Maps 5 brings in an 3D maps of around 100 cities world over as also the ability to use maps offline. Your most frequent locations (where you use the Maps most, to be exact) are what get qualified to offline usage, so, it’s a limited to that extent. Anyway, you wouldn’t really expect Google to load the whole world on your phone, right?

In the 3D mode, you can twist view to peek the supported cities from different angles. Another addition is the compass mode, which rotates the map for you in the direction you are facing.

Of course, it’s quite a big update Google Maps has gotten and you should definitely give it a whirl. While the update is compatible with android 1.6 and higher versions, only android 2.x devices will get offline use and 3D view.

Yet another feature will be rolling out in few weeks, called the offline rerouting, which will re-route you offline, if you lose internet connection after selecting a route on Google Maps.
