Google Drive for Android updated. Receives native spreadsheet editing support.

Google’s native cloud storage solution for Android — Google Drive just received a shot in the arm earlier this afternoon. Those who depend upon Google Drive on a regular basis would be pleased to hear that Google just updated Google Drive earlier today, and the new update brings full spreadsheet editing to the app, among other notable enhancements.

With the new update, you’ll now be able to edit just about anything in a document right from your Android smartphone or tablet, without having to get anywhere near a computer. Just the way you could do it within a browser. The new update ups the app to version 1.1.470.11, and introduces features that power users have been waiting for some time now. Nice holiday gift this, Google!

Here’s a quick list of the good stuff this update brings to Google Drive.

  • Edit Google spreadsheets in new native editor
  • Edit contents of tables in Google Docs editor
  • Formatting is maintained when copy/pasting within Google Docs
  • Single tap to enter edit mode in Google Docs editor
  • Add a shortcut to Drive files/folders to your homescreen for quick access
  • Send Link now supports copying link to clipboard

The new update brings browser based Google Docs like functionality to the Android Google Drive app. Users can now switch fonts and colors, re-size layouts, as well as add filters or sort data easily. Plus, you will be able to watch updates live, just the way it works in a browser.

This is a major step by Google in its efforts to standardize the Google experience across desktops and mobile devices. Google+ and Chrome for Android have already got the treatment, and now Google Drive, one of the most heavily used Google apps joins the list.
