Galaxy S6 and S6 edge TWRP Recovery now available, installation guide

galaxy s6 and s6 edge

With the worldwide launch of Galaxy S6 and S6 edge on 10th April, things like root and stuff are coming up at good pace for the two devices now. Last week, Chainfire released root for the Galaxy S6 edge SM-G925F and Galaxy S6 SM-G920I. And now today TeamWin has released its popular TWRP recovery for the international Galaxy S6 edge variants with code name “zeroflte”.

The “zeroflte” is the code name for all international variants of the device, which includes SM-G920F, SM-G925F, SM-G920I and SM-G925I. You can flash this TWRP recovery image on any of these devices.

As for the TWRP recovery, in case you don’t know, it’s a touch based custom recovery that let’s you take nandroid backup for full system restore when need be and also let’s you install/flash custom ROMs and MODs.

If you’re a seasoned user, just grab the TWRP recovery .tar file from the download link below and flash it using the latest Odin. For help, follow the detailed step-by-step instructions guide below.

Important Note: Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files.

  1. Make sure your Galaxy S6 is one following models: SM-G920F, SM-G925F, SM-G920I or SM-G925I. If not, then do not proceed with the steps below.
  2. Extract/Unzip the Odin 3.10.6 file, Odin3_v3.10.6.zip on your computer (using 7-zip free software, preferably)You’ll get the following files:
    • Odin3 v3.10.6.exe
    • Odin3.ini
    • SS_DL.dll
  3. Disconnect your Galaxy S6 from PC if it is connected.
  4. Double-click the Odin3-v3.10.6.exe file to open Odin.
  5. Boot your Galaxy S6 into Download Mode:
    1. Power off your phone first and wait for 6-7 seconds after display is off.
    2. Press and hold these 3 buttons together until you see Warning! screen: Volume Down + Power + Home.
    3. Press Volume Up now to continue to Download Mode.

  6. Connect Galaxy S6 to PC. Odin window will show an Added!! message in bottom left box. Odin’s screen would look like this:
Odin 1.85 CF Auto Root Device Added
If you don’t get the Added! message, here are some troubleshooting tips:
    • Make sure you have installed proper USB driver for Galaxy S6.
    • If you have already installed driver, then uninstall them and reinstall back.
    • Connect using a different USB port on your PC.
    • Try a different USB cable. The original cable that came with your phone should work best, if not, try any other cable that’s new and of good quality.
    • Reboot phone and PC and then try again.
  7. Load the Recovery file which you downloaded above into Odin as instructed below:
    • Click on the PDA button on Odin and select the twrp-2.8.6.0-zeroflte.img.tar file.
Your Odin window should look like the screenshot below:
      File-Added-CF-Auto-Root
  8. Now in the Option section of Odin, make sure that Re-Partition box is unchecked. (Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time boxes remain checked, while all other boxes remain unchecked.)
  9. Double check the above two steps.
  10. Click the Start button to begin flashing CF-Auto-root on your Galaxy S6, and wait until you see a PASS! message in Odin’s top left box.
  11. When you get either RESET! or PASS! message, your phone will reboot into recovery and root your Galaxy S6 and again restart automatically. You can then disconnect your phone from PC.
    RESET-or-PASS-Message-CF-Auto-Root

If you see FAIL message instead of the RESET or PASS in Odin’s top left box, that’s a problem. Try this now: disconnect your Galaxy S6 from PC, close Odin, reboot into download mode by pressing “Power + Home + Volume Down” buttons for a few seconds, open Odin and then repeat from Step 4 of this guide again.

Also, If device is Stuck at setup connection or on any other process, then too, try this: disconnect your Galaxy S6 from PC, close Odin, reboot into download mode by pressing “Power + Home + Volume Down” buttons for a few seconds, open Odin and then repeat from Step 4 of this guide again.

That’s all. If you need help regarding this, feel free to ask us in comments below.

  1. Hello 🙂 Tks for sharing 😉 Can you confirm me that works with the S6 SM-G920F & S6 Edge SM-G925F ? Thanks

    1. No, can’t confirm it for real. But all international variants including 920F and 925F have codename “zeroflte”, which this recovery is built for, so it should/must work. Also, there are reports that it’s even working on T-Mobile Galaxy S6 SM-G920T which is “zerofltetmo”.

    2. Hello

It’s confirmed on XDA. This TWRP version doesn’t work with the S6 Edge variant –> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/orig-development/cf-auto-root-t3056631/page7

    3. That is for the broken G925 cf-auto-root file, not the TWRP recovery. “Hello It’s confirmed on XDA. This TWRP version doesn’t work with the S6 Edge variant –> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/orig-development/cf-auto-root-t3056631/page7
