Galaxy S3 sales remain unaffected, even after discouraging lawsuit and iPhone 5 launch

Looks like it would take more than a $1 billion patent lawsuit and the launch of the iPhone 5 to slow down the sales figures and demand for the current prince of smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy SIII. A report published by global marketing and research firm Localytics indicates that the  Galaxy SIII is well on its way to achieve record sales figures before the end of this year.

Earlier in August 2012, Samsung was engaged in a lawsuit with Apple Inc, which filed for sales prohibition of some of the Samsung Galaxy devices on grounds that they were slavishly copied from the iPhone and iPad. The litigation received extensive coverage in the online as well as offline media. The report suggests that this is likely to have increased customer awareness of the Galaxy S3, thereby making customers believe that the Samsung devices were similar enough to iPhones and a viable option, indicated by a 16% jump in sales figures the week the verdict was handed out and another 15% jump the week the iphone 5 was announced. As a result, the Galaxy S3 sales spiked during the entire period the lawsuit was ongoing, and continue to surge forward even after the lawsuit concluded. See Graph below

Another reason for the boost in sales could be that consumers fearing a potential sales ban on the Galaxy S3 would have chosen to get one before it possibly went off the shelves. Of course, the ban never really happened, but the consumer is still happy having got an awesome device and Samsung is laughing all the way to the bank.
