This should certainly make some users of the Samsung Galaxy S3 happy after hearing reports of the iPhone 5 “retina” display being great and “one of the best” out there. According to a study performed by IHS, the Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy S3 is superior to the IPS LCD display on Apple’s latest iPhone, at least technically.
According to the study, the Galaxy S3 display is just 1.1mm thick and contains the full color gamut of the NTSC standard, while the iPhone 5 display is 1.5mm thick and can only provide 72 percent of the standard color gamut. The iPhone 5 display does carry the full sRGB gamut which no other display currently does (providing a more visible difference than the NTSC gamut), but when it comes to the NTSC gamut, the Galaxy S3 apparently gets ahead.
This of course has nothing to do with the real life experience of either displays and is just a technical test that won’t matter to the majority of users, who will decide which display is better on their own. Both displays are great displays in their own right, so it all comes down to preference.
