Galaxy S MIUI ROM Installation Guide

Installing MIUI was one of the most painful jobs ever, earlier. But thankfully, the punishment is over and now one can install it pretty easily.

THIS POST IS BEING UPDATED TO GET YOU THE LATEST AND EASIEST METHOD TO INSTALL THE MIUI ROM ON GALAXY S i9000. So, follow this new method only and forget everything else that was mentioned here earlier here (which is still lying below).

[error]This guide is applicable only for Samsung’s Galaxy S international version (GT-i9000). Check your phone’s version in Settings – About Phone. It has to be “GT-i9000” for this ROM to be compatible with your phone. If it’s not GT-i9000, simply don’t try this ROM on your android handset — don’t even think about it if you care about your android device.[/error] Warning: Warranty may be void of your device if you follow the procedures given on this page. You only are responsible for your device. We wont be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

Btw, whether your Galaxy S i9000 is running Android 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3 (any firmware), you can use this guide to install MIUI ROM. What you need is a Galaxy S i9000 device — not any other Galaxy S variant: Vibrant, Fascinate, Epic, etc.

How to Install MIUI on Galaxy S i9000

  1. Download and Install XXJVS Android 2.3.5 firmware.
  2. Root XXJVS. This will also install ClockWorkMod recovery, which is needed to flash MIUI ROM.
  3. Download MIUI ROM from → here. This is MIUI’s own download page where download links for all phones can be found. Scroll down on the page, look for ‘I9000’ and click the download button next to it.
  4. Transfer the MIUI ROM to phone’s sd card.
  5. Go to recovery mode. For this, simply open the CWM app (you get it after step 2) and tap on ClockWorkMod to reboot phone into recovery mode. [Other way to reboot in recovery is to switch off phone and then press and hold 3 buttons together: VolumeUP+Home+Power till the Galaxy S logo shows up on screen]
  6. In recovery, select “install zip from sd card”. Then select “choose zip from sd card”. Now, browse through sd card and select the file MIUI ROM you downloaded in step 3 and transferred in step 4 above.
  7. This will flash the required files on your phone and will reboot your phone into recovery again. This is a slightly different recovery now.
  8. Again, select “install zip from sd card”. Them select “choose zip from sd card”. Now, browse through sd card and select the file MIUI ROM you downloaded in step 3 and transferred in step 4 above.
  9. This time, the MIUI ROM will be flashed actually and after it’s installed, your phone will reboot with MIUI running coolly.
  10. Check that awesome themes app which has tons of cool themes waiting for you. Enjoy!
  11. [Optional] Share this guide with others!
  12. And it’s pretty easy now, right? Thanks to MIUI team.

OLD VERSION BELOW — NOT USEFUL ANYMORE

EARLIER VERSION OF THIS POST IS BELOW. IT IS NOT USEFUL ANYMORE, ALTHOUGH IT DID US GREAT SERVICE BACK THEN 🙂

=====================================================================

MIUI — the famous ROM that brings the best of two worlds of Android and iOS — is now available for Samsung Galaxy S (i9000) too. The ROM just got its release candidate out — MCGvX to be exact — which means it’s out of beta now and that the full and final release is ‘coming soon’. There are still some bugs here or there (which, frankly, and surprisingly, didn’t bother me one bit) and I can say, it’s definitely lot better (read: stable) now with almost everything fully working. The working of the ROM apart, it would be cruel if we don’t thank the team who has worked restlessly for months to make this Happen — MAMBO04, Kenia and jblanc, THANK YOU!!!

About the MIUI ROM:

  • Latest Version — MCGvX [Updated]
  • Android 2.3.3 (latest android OS version for phones)
  • Based on Official MIUI ROM
  • New Official Home Page
  • MIUI on Twitter – @MIUI9000
  • XDA Thread
  • Stuff working

    • 2G/3G
    • Internal SD Card
    • Home button
    • Volume keys
    • Touchkeys
    • WiFi
    • Sound
    • Theme Manager
    • Camera (still choppy)
    • File Manager
    • EXT SD! BIG thanks to Zygame!
  • Stuff not working (Work-In-Progress)
    • SOME bugs from CM7 (INCLUDING: Battery drain, Camera, TV OUT.)
    • Market crashes when rating an app.

[info]Important: This guide is applicable only for Samsung’s Galaxy S international version (i9000). If yours is Vibrant/Captivate/Fascinate/Epic 4G/i9000M/i9000B/i9003 or any other Galaxy S variant, then this ROM — and the Guide — is not for you, and that’s for definite.[/info] Warning: Warranty may be void of your device if you follow the procedures given on this page. You only are responsible for your device. We wont be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

MAKE SURE YOU CAN ENTER INTO DOWNLOAD MODE (given in Step 3.2 below) before trying this guide, or in fact, any stuff on your phone.

It’s very important and very much required that you Galaxy S is running on Froyo before you begin to install the MIUI ROM. Here are the different scenarios with what you should do in each case.

Case I — Galaxy S with Android 2.1 (Éclair)

I would recommend installing the EZRom — which will install the Android 2.2.1 (Froyo) on your phone and you’ll be alright for installing the MIUI ROM then. Get the EZRom’s installation guide with video over here.

Case II — Galaxy S with Android 2.2/2.2.1 (Froyo)

You’re pretty good to begin the installation procedure. Check the pre-installations requirements below, though.

Case III — Galaxy S with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)

You should get back to Froyo. Use the EZRom (‘How To Install’ here).

Pre-Installation requirements:

  1. Once again, make sure you’re on Froyo.
  2. Disable the lagfix, if any. Go to recovery and select the lagfix option therein and select disable. Check this article for more info.
  3. Remove the external SD Card from your phone and don’t put it back until the whole process is complete. (So that you don’t get confused between the two sd cards.)
[info]The video below shows installation of RC1 but the procedures are same (ditto!) for all future realeses (MCGvX) . Thus, the Video will be totally useful for all.[/info]

ROM Installation Video.

Watch the video in FULL before beginning to install MIUI ROM. So that you’re more comfortable and aware while installing the ROM.

You know, this guide is very hack-ish and it actually frightened me a couple of times. BUT, I can say it was totally worth. The ROM is just amazing — you’ll understand it only when you actually use it.

Okay, enough! Here are the Installation instructions.

Installation Steps (this will install MIUI MCGvX version on your Galaxy S i9000):

  1. Download the required stuff:
    1. galaxys-efsbackup.zip – Direct download link.
    2. MCGvX.X.X – Direct download link[Updated]
    3. cm7-galaxys-initial-kernel.tar – Direct download link.
    4. speedmod-kernel-k13c-500hz.tar – Direct download link.
    5. Odin3 v1.7.exe – Direct download link.
  2. Transfer the first two files above, “galaxys-efsbackup.zip” and “MCGvX.X.X” to your phone’s internal SD Card’s root folder. That is, don’t put the above two files in any sub-folder on your SD Card.
  3. Flash the SpeedMod Kernel:
    1. Unplug the phone if it’s connected to PC. Switch it Off. Wait for it to vibrate a little to confirm complete switch Off.
    2. Get your Galaxy S in Download Mode — Press and hold these keys together: VolumeDOWN+Home+Power.
    3. Now, open Odin. Double click the file Odin3 v1.7.exe.
    4. Plug-in USB cable to connect your Galaxy S (which is in Download Mode) to PC. You should get the “Added! !”notification in the message box of Odin.
    5. In Odin, keep the “Re-Partition” button un-checked. Keep the “Auto reboot” and “F.Reset Time” buttons checked.
    6. Now, click the PDA tab and select the file — speedmod-kernel-k13c-500hz.tar (file at step 1.4 above). Hit Start to flash the speedmod kernel.
    7. After flashing is done, phone will reboot. Upon reboot, Power Off the phone (wait for vibration to confirm complete Switch Off).
    8. Close Odin.
  4. Installing galaxys-efsbackup.zip:
    1. Enter your phone in recovery mode. Press and hold these keys together: VolumeUP+Home+Power (release when Galaxy S logo appears).
    2. Select “install zip from sd card”.
    3. On next screen, select “choose zip from sd card”. Browse through SD Card and select the file “galaxys-efsbackup.zip”. Select “Yes – Install galaxys-efsbackup.zip”.
    4. After it’s installed, pull the battery out and then, plug it back in. Do Not restart phone, though!
  5. Flashing the CM7 kernel:
    1. Get the phone in Download Mode — Press and hold these keys together: VolumeDOWN+Home+Power.
    2. Open Odin. (Double click the file Odin3 v1.7.exe)
    3. Plug-in USB cable to connect your Galaxy S (which is in Download Mode) to PC. You should get the “Added! !”notification in the message box of Odin.
    4. In Odin, keep the “Re-Partition” button un-checked. this time — IMPORTANT! — keep the “Auto reboot” button UN-CHECKED too. While, keep only the “F.Reset Time” button checked.
    5. Now, click the PDA tab and select the file “cm7-galaxys-initial-kernel.tar” (at step 1.3 above). Hit Start to flash “cm7-galaxys-initial-kernel.tar”.
    6. After flashing is done, you’ll be still in download mode. Now don’t pull battery. Instead, go to Recovery mode from right there. Press and hold these keys together: VolumeUP+Home+Power (release when Galaxy S logo appears).
  6. Formatting System, Data and Cache.
    1. In recovery, go to “mounts and storage”. You need to Wipe Off System, Data and Cache.
    2. Wiping Off the System: Select “format /system”. Choose “Yes – Format” on the next screen.
    3. Wiping Off the Data: Select “format /data”. Choose “Yes – Format” on the next screen.
    4. Wiping Off the Cache: Select “format /cache”. Choose “Yes – Format” on the next screen.
    5. Select “Go back” at the bottom to return to recovery’s main menu.
  7. Flashing the MIUI ROM (Finally!):
    1. On the recovery’s main menu, select “install zip from sdcard”.
    2. On next screen, select “choose zip from sd card”. Browse through SD Card and select the file “MCGvX.X.X”.
    3. Select “Yes – Install MCGvX.X.X” on next screen. This will install the MIUI ROM.
    4. You’ll be back at recovery. Select “go back”. On the main menu, select “reboot system now” to restart phone. The MIUI ROM will be applied to your phone now.
    5. You’ll notice your screen go mad, literally. In the installation video (above), it’s happening at 10 mins 57 seconds, for some 22 seconds (till 11:19). That was frightening to me (as I mentioned earlier). But don’t panic, let the process continue and you’ll soon see the MIUI Logo. Everything’ is a lot cool from now on. Amazing stuff begins!
  8. You’ll soon see the boot up screen. Press the Android and go through the initial setup stuff.
  9. Let the phone remain idle for a few minutes since it’s the first boot.
  10. The led keys — back key and menu key — may not work right away. No worries though, just lock the screen (screen-off) and then unlock (screen-on) it, and the keys would work alright. A minor bug!
  11. Okay, the The MIUI ROM is there for you to play and explore its bits. Check out the notification bar which has gone completely incredible now. More in this — and even cooler features of MIUI — in the “MIUI Highlights” video (at the bottom of this article).
  12. Enjoy!
  13. I know you like this ROM. So, do consider donating to MIUI team for their super-galaxial work. To donate MAMBO04, send your PayPal donation at this address — [email protected]. I can’t find the donation addresses of others, so will update when I get it.
  14. That’s it.

UPDATE (For MCGvX):

Upgrade to MCGvX using the recovery. Download the MIUI version MCGvX from here: “MCGvX.X.X – Direct Direct download link”. For that, transfer the file — MCGvX.X.X – to your phone’s sdcard and then power off. Reboot into recovery – press and hold VolumeUP+Home+Power keys until Galaxy S logo appears. Select “Install zip from sdcard” and then select “choose zip from sdcard”. The, select the file MCGvX.X.X and choose Yes on next screen. MCGvX will be flashed.

Benchmark Scores — for whatever they’re worth! Frankly, I don’t have too much faith in these scores.

  1. Can i root it the same way like i did with the XXJVK 2.3.3 Rom ?

    1. Buddy MIUI ROM is already rooted. You don’t need to do any other stuff over it.

    2. HI Kapil just to check with u , the ROM is understood in its inaugural stage and consecutively been updated weekly however there are some basic apps such as bluetooth application where I am unable to use it & often ‘Force Close’ the application . So is it due to the CM7 bugs infested & instability had made the ROM apps such as unavailability of the ‘High Speed Data Download & Bluetooth application’. Perhaps with your knowledge with this ROM any comments abt resolving it..? Thanks

  2. Okay, thanks :).

  3. Is this ROM multilanguage or just english?

    1. It’s English only right now 🙁

  4. Oh okay :/ , they will add more languages, wont they? Please say yes :D.

    1. Can’t say for sure but I think they will add more languages…. it takes a lot of effort, so you can be only hopeful that they do.

  11. Hi, thanks for the guide. Very informative. However, I would like to point out that for CASE III, Galaxy with Android 2.3, it is not advisable to go to Darkyy’s Resurrection Rom, as this Rom do not have the necessary 2.2 bootloaders. I know it sound strange that a 2.3 GB requires a 2.2 bootloader, but the cm7 kernel is based on the 2.2 kernel. If the people proceed with flashing Resurrection Rom, the end result will be that the Cyanogenmod screen will be corrupted. You will encounter screen tearing during the bootup. I know this because I was on a 2.3 kernel and flashed MIUI. I got the screen tearing issue. So, I did go back to a 2.2 froyo rom (inclusive of the bootloaders) and did the whole thing again. This time everything was perfect.

For the roms with 2.2 bootloaders, xda member had provided the xxjp1 in his website (thanks galnet). Another one would be the EZRom by nitr8, which can be found in the xda forum as well.

Hope you can amend the instructions to include the above. 🙂

    1. Hello G00ndo, thank you very much for pointing it out. Though I completely believe you (I’ve seen you quite lot of times on XDA), I had tried the MIUI ROM coming from Darkyy resurrection only and I didn’t get any issues except the screen disruption during MIUI RC1 installation (it’s at 10:57 in the video) which I think isn’t caused by lack of bootloaders therein. Maybe I’m wrong, but, I’m feeling lucky too. Anyways, I’m gonna edit the post (for sure!) and direct the users to EZRom. I already have the EZRom installation video ready, so would make an ‘how-to’ article of EZRom.

I think it will help all the users who wanna try the MIUI or any other Gingerbread ROMs (JV1/JVK) and then revert back to Froyo. Thanks, again.

  13. Disappointing.
    1. didnt recognize my sim card nor my network (TIM Brazil)
    2. opening new menus is fast, the video shows that, but sliding things up and down is really slow… awkwardly slow, as if we had a newbie menu running on jquery mobile on a 300mhz pc
    3. camera is all messed up (weird lines, kinda like an old qvga cellphone camera)
    4. random resets
    5. no swype
    6. everything is TOO MUCH iphone-wannabe.
for the record, everything described here used to work flawlessly with my european galaxy s running 2.2 froyo.
This 2.3 mod has some nice stuff (ie: the nice effects in home screen as seen on the video), but really messes up important stuff!
I’m going back to froyo, researching how to do it right now…

    1. MIUI is best known for its iphone-ish UI but it’s fast too. I think it’s greater than any custom ROM I’ve tried.

Anyways, you can go back to Froyo using the EZRom mentioned in the article above for those coming from android 2.1/2.3. Follow that link for more info. Plus there is darkys resurrection ROM too which one can apply using Odin, like EZRom. We’ve covered both of them with video, I think that will help you out in reverting back to android 2.2!

    2. Disappointing!!!

RC3 version did not recognise my Sim card. (india – Vodafone).
Reverting to Froyo.. What a waste of time!!

      Shan

    3. Exactly my problem, I was going to downgrade…but them I gave xxjkv 2.3.3 a try and I’m extremely satisfied! I REALLY recommend it! Its pure gingerbread samsung sweetness with swype and everything! Btw I’m replying from it right now, lol!

    4. oops! my reply to kapil was actually to you 😛 give Xxjkv a try!!! Directly install it, no need to downgrade.

    5. Yeah.. installed it and it works like a charm.. Thank you!

  21. @Roberto, Shanmugan:

Firstly you cannot expect this ROM to be perfect out of the box. It is only at RC status and not a Final ROM. Let me outline the issues you stated:

    1. didnt recognize my sim card nor my network (TIM Brazil) <– This is an EFS issue, and it's fixed in RC3b-c.
    2. opening new menus is fast, the video shows that, but sliding things up and down is really slow… awkwardly slow, as if we had a newbie menu running on jquery mobile on a 300mhz pc <– this is where you need to do something on your part, by flashing a new Kernel as it's not the most recent or updated one. Go to XDA and check it out, lag is not present in the new releases. You can overclock/volt the processor to improve battery life and speed.
    3. camera is all messed up (weird lines, kinda like an old qvga cellphone camera) <– this has been stated in the original thread, as MIUI is created using CM7 sources the Camera has been created using source code from scratch, hence no Samsung drivers, hence the quality. MIUI is working on their own 720p camera app which we should have by next week, and hopefully those issues should be fixed or improved upon. You can't compare this to a Froyo ROM as it's Samsung's ROM and they have utmost materials and support to create drivers, and they don't release enough source code.
    4. random resets <– No random resets in any of the releases, are you sure about that? If so, how come you're getting them?
    5. no swype <– Swype can be installed via their own installation app.
    6. everything is TOO MUCH iphone-wannabe. <– This is the whole point, it's not supposed to be stock Android, that's why it's so popular. iOS has a very good feeling to it and this tries to recreate that feeling but in Android, you still get all the Android benefits but a slick UI and very good ROM functions.
for the record, everything described here used to work flawlessly with my european galaxy s running 2.2 froyo. <– Again, you can't compare this to a ROM which has been developed for a long time now and most bugs ironed out, plus it's on a whole different level to Froyo ROMs.
This 2.3 mod has some nice stuff (ie: the nice effects in home screen as seen on the video), but really messes up important stuff!

So i hope that cleared things up for you, check out the main page of our ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992251 and there is a lot of useful help, info and advice. RC4 will be up soon and it'll be much better.

  22. Hi, after I flashed RC3B, I got no signal at all, tried to search for Network but failed.

Is this a known issue with RC3B? I’m downloading RC3C now, hopefully it solves my issue else I have to fall back to Ultimate 8.2.

    Kudos to the developers.

    Cheers.

  23. If you get no signal, then flash Froyo again to restore IMEI number and then install MIUI from there.

  25. Hi, after I flashed RC3B, I got no signal at all, tried to search for Network but failed.

Is this a known issue with RC3B? I’m downloading RC3C now, hopefully it solves my issue else I have to fall back to Ultimate 8.2.

    Kudos to the developers.

    Cheers.

  26. If you get no signal, then flash Froyo again to restore IMEI number and then install MIUI from there.

  27. Hi! Great work!

Maybe its an idea to make a guide about how you revert to a (custom) froyo rom from MIUI or CM7. This will make it easier for new people to try MIUI out, since they see they can go back to what they had before (their favourite custom froyo/gb rom)

  33. First of – thanks for the awesome guide! It was a breeze to install MIUI on my SGS after reading it.

Have any of you flashed a different Kernel onto your device after installing MIUI? If so, which one do you recommend? MIUI is working just fine, but there’s a slight jitter on scrolling up and down (as mentioned in another comment above).

    1. I haven’t flashed a different kernel after installing MIUI, so can’t say much about it. No recommendations, either 🙁

  34. Finally jumping from Good Old Froyo (currently on the awesome simply galaxy) to either CM7 or MIUI. Any recommendations? Which one do you guys prefer?

  37. Settings -RC5 crashing

    1. Oh- My mistake. Crashing of settings happens because of the iphone theme I installed. 🙂 Rc5 is very stable and beatiful.

      Worth the upgrade !!!!

  38. hey can someone help me? just installed this RC5, Autorotate not functioning..

    1. To fix the Auto-Rotation issue, use this CM7 kernel — flash it using Odin. Keep Re-Partition unchecked while Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked. I haven’t tried it but this is based on Affan’s recommendation — who, in case you didn’t know, mastered the MIUI on Galaxy S for us, with other members of his team.

And let us know whether it’s fixed or not. 🙂

    2. Hi Kapil,

That one worked, before seeing your reply, I made a research installed the cm7 platypus but there are bugs on that. Just to correct odin didn’t recognized the file so I saved it on the sd card and install thru recovery mode 🙂

  40. You need a new Kernel, go to XDA Galaxy S Development and download a custom CM7 Kernel by Zach or Bilboa. Kapil you may want to list it on here.

    1. Will check that and update — thnx!

  47. HI there again, I manage to resolve the problem as with regards to the ‘Network’ or SIM card problem experienced upon installation. All I have to do is reset the ROM to ‘Foryo’ Android 2.2 (XXJPA) extension and thereafter loading it and did manaual configuration in the network setting and lastly saving the ‘Access Point’ prior to switching off the phone. Everything went smooth as per instruction but however the’Market’ is the only one which is yet to be resolve as whenever I use my ‘network’ to open Market to download Apps I am unable but if I use a Wi-Fi I am able to download the Apps from Market. Ironically I can download songs from the web directly using my ‘network’ . Thus my derivation to the problems is the Market where the bugs need to be fixed…

    – Thanks to the community guys!!

    2. I’ve done it.. its fine..

  50. i flashed it 3 times already but my IMEI is still missing/incorrect…
what am i doing wrong ?

    1. try to use root explorer and mount to RW and deelete efs folder

    2. Lemem see if I can help you. Try the XDA thread of the MIUI too — seek some help there.

    3. what does mount to RW mean? and if after i delete the efs folder, continue flashing miui like normal ? or any additional steps?

    4. thanks, i tried to post in the forum thread but i do not have the permissions to make a reply…

    5. You have to be registered there. So, first register at XDA, and then login using your ID n Password. Then you’ll be able to post a reply — mention proper details there, I hope you get the solution!

    6. I did register, but it seems that xda doesnt like new users posting in their forum – (Sorry, users below 50 posts cannot post in this forum)

I solved the problem, the 5th time that I reflashed, I redownloaded the efs backup file.. maybe it was corrupted? but now theres no problem =)

  54. Ok, I installed it exactly as you mentioned in the Video above and have a major problem. My network is not getting recognized. It always says no service. can you please help out with this problem ASAP. PLEASE!

    1. I will try to find a solution…. It’ll take some timer, though. Maybe, a day.

  59. I have just flashed RC5 to my Galaxy S but the 3G data is not working, it finds my network and I can make calls but not download data. Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

    1. Hi Brendan I’m too facing the same problem, despite the 3G network available however it did detect the High Speed Data Transfer ‘H’ which would blink whenever there is a download thus its difficult to make any download unless if you are using ‘Wi-Fi’ which is the alternate source of downloading stuff right now till further upgrades and bugs repair of the ROM available every Friday..so just look for it as I am looking forward for a solution from the community..

  60. nice job guys! thanks a lot, been using miui for a while on my htc evo 4g(some small bugs still, yet ok with it), installed it on galaxy s for the first time, not bad so far, the original rom crashed on me a lot, hope miui would improve it. thanks guys, great job!

  68. Hey!

    Great guide, works great.

However, i saw that there is RC6 out now. How do I upgrade from to the new version??

  69. Hey, the XDA forums says to use the Antilon kernel. How do i flash that kernel? Can you please make a tutorial. I’d be more than grateful. I’m new to all this, so please help out. Thx in advance 🙂

    1. If you’re installing the ROM for the first time, install it as per the steps (follow full guide) given above.
Or, if you’ve already installed any of the previous versions of MIUI, just flash the RC6b (“MIUI9000_RC6b_1.4.22_MB.zip”) by installing it using recovery mode (as said in step 7 above).

For those who are too much concerned with Antilon Kernel, it’s included in RC6b, so no need to find and flash it separately. Easy!

  70. 1 more thing. The RC5b installation on my i9000 went smooth. Great job i must say, but when i restarted my phone, All my saved data was gone. My contacts, settings, and I had customized the launcher, but all gone. Am i the only one to face this, or is there a prior occurance of this? Please let me know if there is a fix for this. Love the ROM so far 😀

    1. Hey @itskapil:disqus , The problem i was facing was only partly fixed. On incoming calls, , The callers can hear my voice only 1 out of 3 times. That is slightly disturbing. Does the MGv3 Have a fix for this? Please help out as the XDA page has not given any changelogs on the MGv3. Would really appreciate the help. Thx

    2. Um, you can try MGv3. I am no longer using MIUI, so, can’t test and tell
anything. I think v3 would solve that.

  90. @itskapil:disqus thanks a lot for the update 🙂 just installed it… no network issues… will tell u if der r any further problems.. thanks again 😀

  91. @itskapil:disqus i am not gettin any signal

  92. @itskapil:disqus is der a way to download samsung apps?

    1. Hey, you just migrated to MIUI and are already missing those Samsung Apps — sounds strange, and funny. BTW, I don’t think there is a good way to get the Samsung Apps application back but you can try nitrality’s app, link here:
      https://nerdschalk.com/nitrality-android-app-for-galaxy-s-launched-in-android-market/
Just know that I’m not sure whether it would work out or not since MIUI is a separate thing and I haven’t tried anything like this on MIUI before. It could mess things up or maybe, would work out smoothly, I don’t know.

BTW, now that you are on MIUI try out the its theme engine, the best theme app out there and explore the great themes all available for free. I think you are gonna love that.

I hope the nitrality app does the job for you.

    2. Oh, just Googled for it and found the apk to install Samsung Apps app. here is the download link —

    1. Make sure you are pressing right button — which is, power button — to
select an option. Using the Home key won’t work.
And, btw, your phone is not bricked if download mode reachable. No matter
what you’ve done or what has happened to your device, it’s okay if you can
go to download mode because using it with Odin, you can install
      the Samsung’s ROM anytime.

  102. @itskapil:disqus Thanks very much man.. You have saved me from an heart attack 🙂 Thanks!

  103. Im on step# 6 System, Data and Cache: When I select on “mounts and storage ” nothing happens.. I’m I bricked? Please help..

  109. Please make sure to include that the phone not only must first be on froyo, it must also be on a froyo BOOTLOADER. Gingerbread bootloader also supports froyo, hence causing confusion among people who think they are on Full froyo, but actually have a ginger bootloader.

Without this pre requisite, it will cause the problem of not able to read the external SD card and also the crazy boot up screen.

    1. I am on which bootloader? how to find it

    2. You have the bootloader of Android2.3 if you flashed any of the recently
leaked official Android 2.3 ROM recently, otherwise Android 2.2 bootloaders
are what you have. If you’re not sure of anything, just flash the EZRom

  140. Hi Kapil, I tried flashing but I lost IMEI and was unable to connect to operator network(airtel). I am on 2.3.4.
Can I safely got FROYO using EzRom and follow your guide?

    1. Yes you can.

    2. If MIUI doesn’t work, you can first install EZRom for Froyo and then flash
      XXJVP Android 2.3.4 Rom.

    3. I too have airtel and unable to connect to the network and my imei number is also been changed….did u get any fix for the network to work???

    1. Okay…. Nice. I’ll try it, too. Thanks for sharing. Btw, there are better
EFS backup and restore apps, like, nitrality, etc.

    4. @2aa4afd7435c13a39ce07bbf8336410e:disqus Hey man, how are you. your tip works great. one just needs to restore the EFS back to solve the no-signal problem on Galaxy S MIUI. BTW, I used the nitrality app and I would recommend the same to you too. It’s in English and works like a charm — very fast.

THANKS for sharing this great tip with us!

BTW, what’s up? you still on MIUI, or hv changed to any other ROM or phone?

    5. You saved my life ! Well, maybe not my “life”, but my phone, that’s for sure. I did the process with Nitrality (even if I’m French) and it worked like a charm.

  160. quick question, sgs running 2.3.3, will it still be possible to flash miui through the general method..? :S

    1. You’ll need to flash Android 2.2 EZRom first as given above for the Android
2.3 case. Everything you need to know is given in the post above — just
      read it from the beginning.

    2. Would be best to start from Froyo. Again, your phone needs to be rooted so use EZROM.

  162. Hey Guys, I am sure you’ve read several threads on this problem. I have almost searched every forum but couldn’t find a working solution. It is regarding the Soft Keys on my SGS. I installed MIUI using the above steps. Started with EZROM and continued with MIUI. When I started my phone I noticed the softkeys were no more working. I know Kapil mentioned that there is a minor bug with the soft keys. But for me they never worked, lock – unlock- restart – reflash – installed stock rom etc. I followed the entire process again today but same results.

My guess is that MIUI may have disabled the softkeys because it normally works on phones with button keys like Acer, Droid etc. Could this be a right assumption?

Can you please let me know if you faced this problem? Also is there a solution or thread I can read which provides some fix?

    1. Hi Guys,I got it to work after a long struggle going on for more than a week and more than 100 ROM flashes, don’t know what is the max limit just kidding.I downloaded and installed the stock ROM for 2.2.1 from samfirmware.com. The ROM number is I9000ZSJPJ under Asia. Then ran the Touch key FW update by keying in *#*#2663#*#* in the dialer menu. This ran the update successfully, earlier it used to go in an endless loop. This time it worked and the Touchkeys were back again.I just installed MIUI and it works like a charm with the touchkeys. Thanks for reviewing and responding to my post. Happy Galaxing!!!

    2. Wow…. that’s one cool tip. Thnx for sharing!

  168. Can please anyone suggest me a tutorial on how go get back to my ORIGINAl samsung galaxy s rom???????

    1. Download the firmware for your region from samfirmware.com. It’s under toolbox, firmwares, android, then select Galaxy S i9000.

Btw, you can simply install the latest Samsung firmware, xxjvr, based on Android 2.3.4. It’s website’s homepage.

  188. after i have done all the written things here, still could not manage to install miui. after first flash the opens with cyanogen boot image, boots into recovery but could not find the zip file (/external_sd – no files found). what should i do?

    1. Don’t use extremely SD card. Store miui file in internal SD card.

    2. Don’t use external SD card, I meant.

    3. phone’s sd card!

    4. Yeah, use phone’s own pre-installed SD card.

  190. Will the new procedure work if I’m on a rooted XXJVR(2.3.4) ROM?

I really don’t want to upgrade to a leaked ROM! :/

    1. Yes. Root and install cement recovery on your Galaxy S with JVR installed. And then download and flash MIUI.

    2. My phone’s already rooted and is running ClockworkMod Recovery.

What is Cement Recovery? I have never come across that term!

    3. Ohh… That was just a typo (typing mistake).

You can flash MIUI right away, skipping the JVS related steps.

    4. Ohkay! 😀

I hope the fact that I’m on Juwe’s ROM v5.3 won’t interfere in the installation!

    5. Disable lagfix if your custom ROM is using that. That’s important!

    6. No lagfixes! 🙂

Downloading ROM now! I hope all goes well! 🙂

Btw, you have a typo in your post.Third step. “You can download MIUI form here”

    7. Checked — I don’t think it needs any change. But if one more user points it out, I’ll change it 🙂

Btw, just checked out your blog. It’s nice!

    8. Man, your galaxy tab 750 review is just awesome. Hats Off !!
Rarely I meet such passionate bloggers in India. Subscribing to your blog 😀
Btw, typo corrected. At first, I thought you meant adding “you can” in the beginning of instructions. Anyway, thanks!

    9. Thanks so much for the kind words, Kapil! 🙂

  192. Flashed this successfully! Amazing ROM and an amazing guide!

    Thank you SO much!

  193. The install goes wrong in step 7 (new version): it doesn’t reboot further than the black-and-white “galaxy S” screen! I tried to restart but my phone returns to this screen every time.

What should I do? Is my phone bricked? :S

    1. Don’t worry, your phone isn’t bricked.

Were you using any custom ROM before trying this. For now, install JVS and root it using steps number 1 and 2 in the guide.

      And you sure, you’ve Galaxy S GT-i9000?

    2. Yes I’m sure I have an i9000. I used a custom ROM, when I open recovery it seems like my phone opens my old voodoo-CWM. But you think It’s impossible to install MIUI on my phone? 🙁

    3. No man, it’s still as easy as it can get. Actually, you had lagfix on which caused problem. If you had disabled the lagfix before flashing MIUI, it wouldn’t have happened.

Anyway, you can install xxjvs, root and install cwm recovery and then install MIUI.

  194. Flashed this successfully! Amazing ROM and an amazing guide!

  195. @itskapil:disqus Thank you for your help! I tried it again and for some reason everything worked fine. Now my phone is blazingly fast and the UI is so beautiful!

    1. Cool !

(Btw, didn’t I explain why it didn’t work earlier above?) Ha!

Anyway, more you use it, more you’ll be amazed by it. See ya!

  216. can i reinstall my earlier backup rom through cwm??

    1. Install JVS, root jvs and then restore your earlier backup. Because MIUI has bootloaders different than that of your earlier ROM. Flashing JVS will get you same bootloaders.

  218. Be warned, my i9000 with Android2.3.5, though i had success with this process for MIUI build 1.9.30, when i did the same steps 2 more times, but with a newer build, (1.10.28), it just put my phone into an endless boot loop consisting of the default Galaxy S screen followed by the Cyanogen mod screen, followed by less than one second of a ROM update screen, over and over and over again.
Now for my forth MIUI install but back to 1.9.30.

I should also mention my reason for doing a clean wipe install in the first place even though I had MIUI already on my phone…

After a month of living with MIUI quite happily, I started getting a few force close error messages popping up when openning apps. By the end of the week it was happening with most of my apps. I couldn’t open 99% of them without a force close.

Presumable some kind of cache corruption which I tried to remedy by doing a MIUI factory reset. This made the situation worse as now I’d lost my backing up apps (as it wipes all non MIUI apps) and couldn’t open or log into the marketplace (as it would force close).

In my experience, you shouldn’t expect to get more than about 6 to 8 weeks out of any install before something goes belly up. i.e. sluggish performance, force closing, etc.

Apparently this is part of the fun.

  224. hey, i flashed the miui file by recovery for first time… and it continued by itself till the end, i didnt have to reselect ” choose zip form sdcard ” and select the miui file again… (step 7 and 8 ), would that be normal ??

ie : i dont have and external sdcard, so i put the miui file on phone’s memo

and thanks for the awesome tutorials

    1. That’s fine — about both things you asked.

Maybe MIUI guys updated there file to get rid of second flashing. It’s good news, i’ll update the guide after trying it myself.

      Enjoy 🙂

  225. ok one more thing, if i want to flash any other rom… how would that be done ? ive been trying another rom ( hawkish ), i go into cwm wipe everything then install zip from sd card and choose the rom file… and everything goes perfect until i reboot i found out that im getting into miui again ?

    anyideas ??

  226. hey, i just found out that my mobile network is not working… everything concerning options and simcard are good, made a search and seems that firmware doesnt work on my sim card… is there anyway to fix that ?

  227. hey, i flashed the miui file by recovery for first time… and it continued by itself till the end, i didnt have to reselect ” choose zip form sdcard ” and select the miui file again… (step 7 and 8 ), would that be normal ??

ie : i dont have and external sdcard, so i put the miui file on phone’s memo

and thanks for the awesome tutorials

    1. That’s fine — about both things you asked.

Maybe MIUI guys updated there file to get rid of second flashing. It’s good news, i’ll update the guide after trying it myself.

      Enjoy 🙂

  230. hello, i need help, please !
when starting the phone the normal samsung galaxy s picture appears, that after the picture with the mod an then the picture of the rom manager…..
i can´t do anything, can somebody help me, please ?

    1. You can try booting into recovery and then, do factory reset, do wipe cache partition and then under advanced, do wipe dalvik cache. Then, reboot.
If this doesn’t help, repeat the whole procedure again, man, from step 2.
