Update [December 02, 2016]: The Galaxy Note 5 Nougat release looks closely as, while it was long whispered as under development, today we got its first clue. The Note 5 listing at graphical bench-marking site GFXbench now lists the device with the mention of Android 7.0 too, along with other version Note 5 has been running so far.

Update [November 09, 2016]: As Samsung promised earlier, the company has started distributing the Nougat beta update for its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge today. The update also brings Graze UX along with Android 7.0 upgrade. After gathering feedback from the beta build, Samsung will prepare and release their final Nougat build, which will also serves as base for Nougat update for other devices like Galaxy S6, S6 Edge and Note 5. So, there is no need for separate Nougat beta for Note 5. Once there is a stable build available for one device, company can use this as base and modify for next devices in list for Samsung Nougat update.

Update [November 04, 2016]: Although the Galaxy Note 5 Android 7.0 update release is very far right now, there is some good news we can share with Note 5 users. Samsung looks all set to release its first Nougat update as test build, via the Galaxy beta program app (APK), which allows you to participate in the beta program to receive the Nougat update as beta on your device, if it’s eligible.

Well, the bad news is, that we don’t think Note 5 is an eligible device, at least right now, or at least within next 2-3 months. Samsung didn’t mention which devices are eligible for the Nougat beta update, but they have to be the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, followed by Galaxy S6 siblings. As for the Note 5, hang on to January end release, and the update could become directly available as stable one, instead of taking the beta testing route.

Update (September 21, 2016): Verizon is now releasing a new update of its own too for Galaxy Note 5, and it comes as build N920VVRS3BPI1. The PI1 update brings the September security patch, and the changelog stops right there, with no mention of other details. Look for the ‘system update’ option in Settings to grab the OTA now.

Update (September 20, 2016): AT&T just released a new update as an OTA, known by its build no. N920AUCU3CPHA. The update is sized around 430 MB and while we don’t have the changelog from AT&T yet, it’s being reported that the update brings the Wi-Fi calling support to the AT&T Note 5. Be sure to enable it from Settings to be able to make use of it. Okay, we have the official changelog with us too, which mentions Wi-Fi calling, and also Advanced messaging services. Some other enhancements are also said to be part of the PHA update, but no further into is available as to what this exactly means, but we’d guess it includes bug fixes here and there.

Sprint had come out with a new update for its Note 5, build being N920PVPU2BPH9. Even though it’s not Nougat, which should come only later on in 2017, it’s a nice update. Read more in Sprint section below.

Note 5 is Samsung’s flagship of last year, and given the 2-year update timeline that OEMs generally follow, it didn’t require any rocket science – or official confirmation – that the device would receive Android 7.0 Nougat update. Unlike LG G3 Nougat update, which will come only in unofficial channels, one of which is already out.

But it’s always good to hear what OEMs and carriers say about the anticipated updates, no? Like, when recently, HTC came forward and announced that they are looking to update their HTC 10, One M9 and One A9 to Nougat before the end of this year.

Today’s confirmation from T-Mobile isn’t limited to Note 5 only, as the carrier confirmed Nougat for Note 7 too, along with Galaxy S6 sets and S7 sets. Plus, two HTC devices, One M9 and 10.

But what about others carriers who haven’t confirmed the Nougat update for their Note 5? Well, let’s talk about this in details. After all, one Samsung executive said something the Nougat update release too, in mid-August, that the it would take them around 2-3 months to optimize and release the update.

Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update: What’s new?

With Android Nougat, Google has restructured the notifications shade, and also the Settings app. The former groups down all notifications from an app for neat presentation, while also adds ability to direct reply form the shade itself without needing to open the app. Settings app shows regular info on the outset when you enter the app so that you don’t need to tap into each settings for obvious info.

There is also an addition of multi-window (hold the recents key for this), and fast app switching (double tap recents button for this). Doze mode is advanced in Nougat, while there is a new Data saver feature that should help you save mobile data costs.

Apart from all that Google offers in Android 7.0, Samsung is looking to add the Note 7’s GraceUX to the mix too. This is rumored for Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge actually (from Sammobile), we think this would come back to Note 5 too eventually.

Unlocked Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update

Expected release date: December 2016.

The international variant of Note 5 should be the first among all the variants to score the Nougat update. This has always been the case with Samsung devices going back to the days of original Galaxy S, although there have been some exceptions in the past.

If you want a date, well then watch out for December release. By that time, it should hit Note 5 variant, SM-N910F.

AT&T Note 5 Nougat Update

Expected release date: March 2017.

From our experience with Android OS updates, we can say that AT&T finds it really hard to push out updates in a timely fashion. The company is usually the last one among US carriers, something that wouldn’t just change with Nougat update either.

You don’t need to look any further than the Galaxy Note 4, which is yet to receive Marshmallow — yes, however unbelievable that is to believe! What Marshmallow was to Note 4 is Nougat for Note 5 (SM-N930A). So, Note 4 Marshmallow update is perfect example base — even though disappointing in case of AT&T — when guessing Note 5’s Nougat release.

That’s why few extra months than unlocked Galaxy Note 5’s release.

Sprint Note 5 Nougat update

Expected release date: January 2017.

Once the Note 5 Nougat update is ready, and hits for unlocked variant, it should reach Sprint’s software team too internally from Samsung. Sprint isn’t one to lag behind a lot, and should nee d only extra 30-40 days for that. That makes us go for the Sept. release of Nougat for Sprint Note 5.

FYI, it took Sprint March 24 to release Marshmallow for its Note 4, but because Nougat has released almost 1.5 months before Marshmallow, and update process looks quite speedier this time around, the Sprint Note 5 Nougat update (SM-N930P) should be releasing by January 2017, otherwise February.

A new update has started rolling out as an OTA already for the Sprint Note 5, identified as software version N920PVPU2BPH9. The changelog of PH9 update includes September security patch level, also it also brings stability to Wi-Fi service on the device. The update’s size is around 151 MB.

T-Mobile Note 5 Nougat update

Expected release date: March 2017.

T-Mobile is generally among first ones in US to launch the major Android OS updates. But — and that’s a big but — it really, really under performed with Note 4’s Marshmallow. It took T-Mobile June 27 to release that update, which is why we’re shy of getting you a soon-enough date for T-Mobile Note 5 Nougat update release.

Hence we’re adding several months to international Note 7’s Nougat release, and that brings us to March for T-Mobile Note 5 (SM-N930T).

BTW, it so happens that the S series of Samsung receives updates before the  Note series. So, when S7 Nougat update releases would also help a lot: it would mean that Note 5’s Nougat OTA isn’t far.

T-Mobile just started release of a new update identified as build N920TUVS4DPH2, and it comes with September level patch that is part Google’s monthly security update. We don’t what else is part of the update, but the OTA is available now for download.

That was pretty snappy from T-Mobile, as other carriers are yet to come with this month’s security update, so let’s the same work ethic at T-Mobile software team bring Android Nougat to use very soon.

Verizon Note 5 Nougat update

Expected release date: February 2017.

Usually slow in testing and releasing the updates, Verizon would need 45-60 days of its own once the update hits unlocked variant. And we hope that the S7’s update for Verizon is out too by November 2016. Both things happening would set a good platform for Android Nougat update release for Verizon Note 5 (SM-N930V).

BTW, the carrier brought Marshmallow to Note 4 only by June 2, a massive delay, even though it was better than T-Mobile’s release, but this points to delay for Note 5 Nougat update too.

Update: Verizon has pushed out a new update today, Sept 02, that comes as software version N920VVRU2BPG5, and runs Android 6.0.1 of course. The big Nougat update is quite far right now for the Note 5. The good this though is that update isn’t limited to security patches, which it includes too, as it brings improvements to Advanced calling, news ways to share images and profile pics, and installs Barcode Beaming, enabling apps like Samsung Pay to scan a Barcode, thus saving you from installing an app for this very purpose from Play Store. As for the rest, the Amazon Music app gets the axe in this update, as it will be removed upon installing the PG5 update.

US Cellular Note 5 Nougat update

Expected release date: January 2017.

US Cellular was quicker than T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon in releasing the Marshmallow for its Note 4 (April 14, 2016), so hopes are high for Note 5 Nougat update too.

The carrier has shown time and again that it’s quick in testing and approving the updates — some exceptions barred — and has earned our faith in this, thus. We expect the Nougat update to release for US Cellular Note 5 (SM-N930R4) by January 2017.

Canadian Note 5 Nougat update

Expected release date: March 2017.

Samsung took quite a while in releasing the Note 4 6.0 update to Canadian users (May 24, 2016), so if that doesn’t improves, then don’t expect quicker release of Nougat update for Note 5 users in Canada (SM-N930W8).

So, what are your thoughts on the Note 5 Nougat update? Agree with our expected release dates? What’s your say on carriers in US?
