How to Force Google Duo to Use WiFi only, Not your Mobile Data

Google’s latest app to make video calling better and easier has more features built into it than it meets your eyes. The app has an intelligent system to ensure that you enjoy the best quality on video calls you make/receive from the Google Duo app.

Google Duo smartly switches between your WiFi network and Mobile data for best connection speeds. If the app finds internet speed on your WiFi network to be slow it’ll automatically switch to Mobile data (4G/3G) to ensure good quality video.

However, not all of us live with a big bank data plan. And letting Google Duo use Mobile data for video calls might turn very costly for people with smaller data plans.

To avoid huge data cost due to Google Duo, you can either limit data usage or entirely turn off mobile data and force Google Duo to WiFi only.

How to Limit Mobile Data Usage on Google Duo

  1. Open Google Duo app.
  2. Touch the three-dot menu on top-right corner of the app, and select Settings from there.
  3. Turn On the Limit mobile data usage toggle from the list of options under Duo settings screen.

How to Force Google Duo to Use WiFi only

If you want Google Duo to use WiFi only and not your mobile data, you can turn Mobile data off on your device.

  1. Open Settings on your device.
  2. Select Data usage » toggle off Mobile data.

That’s it. Enjoy video calling via Google Duo without worrying about your mobile data usage. Happy Androiding!

  1. Duo is stupid. I shouldn’t have to completely disable data for every app on my phone just because one app is an entitled greedy pig that can’t keep its hands out of my data bag even when I don’t want it in there.

  3. toggle off Mobile data! omg you are a genius!

  4. Thanks, exactly what I needed to know.

  5. A solution that requires me to REMEMBER to turn off my mobile data every time I use Google Duo is not a solution at all.

  6. I think it is crazy that there is not a option to use Wi-Fi only if you are on a Wi-Fi network, not everyone has unlimited data on their mobile contracts. I have had to stop using Duo until this is fixed.

  7. Are you F—-ING KIDDING ME. This is NOT a solution AT ALL this is a workaround to an absolutely unacceptably missing and obvious feature. F DUO and F GOOGLE. I am so pissed off at google. It isn’t even a quality improvement, the only thing that happens when I switch from Wifi to 5G is the person on the other side complaining WHILE it’s switching, not before. DUO IS TRASH for this stupid “feature”, it’s a problem not a feature.
