How to Root AT&T Galaxy S3

  1. Install ClockworkMod recovery on your phone by following the guide → here.
  2. Download the root package.
Download Root File  |  Filename: CWM_SuperUser_v3.0.7.zip
  3. Copy the CWM_SuperUser_v3.0.7.zip file to the internal SD card on the phone. Do not extract the zip file, copy it as it is to the internal SD.
  4. Now, boot into ClockworkMod recovery. To do that, turn off your phone. Then, hold down Volume Up, Home and then the Power buttons together until the screen turns on, then let them go. The phone will boot into ClockworkMod recovery in a few seconds.
In recovery, use the volume buttons to scroll up/down and the home button to select an option.
  5. Select install zip from sdcard, then select choose zip from sdcard. Then, scroll to the CWM_SuperUser_v3.0.7.zip file and select it. Confirm installation on the next screen by selecting Yes.
  6. After installation is complete, press the back key to go back to the main recovery menu, then select reboot system now to reboot the phone.
  7. Now, after the phone boots up, we need to install BusyBox on the phone. To do so, follow the steps below:
    1. Install BusyBox on the phone from the Play Store here (or search for it on the Play Store on your phone, and install the BusyBox app by Stephen (Stericson)).
    2. Run the BusyBox Free app on the phone.
    3. Allow it root access when it prompts you, by tapping the Allow button.
    4. Tap the red “X” to close the dialog window that pops up.
    5. Allow BusyBox to scan your phone.
    6. Tap Install to install BusyBox and make the necessary file changes. After installation is done, close the BusyBox app.

Your AT&T Galaxy S3 is now rooted and you can use any app that may require root access. Let us know how it works for you, in the comments below.

  7. Will this set the flash counter to 1 or stay at 0

    1. I guess, it would increase the counter, which is nothing to worry about really. And I think you can reset it using USB jig.

  10. Hey guys, followed the instructions on installing CWM and that went fine. I put CWM_SuperUser_v3.0.7.zip in the SD, but when I boot up inside CWM there’s no option to install .zip from SD. Any ideas what might have caused this?

    1. I have this same issue. Did you ever figure out the issue?

    2. Same here, someone has to have an update.

    3. You need to reboot into “custom recovery” mode. If you search for that you should get a number of walk throughs way better than I could explain.
