Before proceeding to download and install a firmware on your OnePlus 3, you must know the difference between ROM, OTA and signed ZIP. That’s relevant for you and helps you in flashing only nice things on your OnePlus 3.

Well, ROM is original firmware as it comes from OnePlus team, while OTA is an incremental update — thus very small in size compared to ROM — which needs an exact base version for which the said OTA update is.

With OnePlus devices, because of extended support provided by OnePlus team, you can use even TWRP recovery besides usual Stock recovery to flash ROM and OTA, but you need to be unrooted first. We’ve covered that in the guide below, so just the whole post before actually flashing anything on your OnePlus 3.

Warning!

Warranty may be void of your device if you follow the procedures given on this page. You only are responsible for your device. We won’t be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

Backup!

Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files.

Downloads

  • Full ROM (Signed ZIP) – Oxygen OS 3.1.2
  • OTA ZIP – not available currently

How to Install

ROM (Signed ZIP)

Download the ROM ZIP, and then copy it to your OnePlus 3.

Next, reboot the device into recovery mode. For that, power off, and when screen is off, press and hold Volume down + Power button together until you see anything on screen.

Next, choose ‘Install from local’, and then select the ROM file, and confirm installation. That’s it, the ROM will be installed soon, just restart the device using ‘Reboot’ option. Give your OnePlus 3 some time to reboot.

OTA ZIP

You cannot install the OTA on a rooted device — if your device’s system partition is modified, the OTA will simply not install.

So, prefer the Full ROM ZIP before OTA to update your OnePlus 3. But when only OTA is available — it takes few days for full ROM to become available after OTA’s release generally — what you can do is install the previous version’s full ROM (this will also unroot the device), and then continue to flash the latest version’s OTA, and then either reboot the device from recovery, or flash SuperSU to gain root access, and then reboot the device.

So, here is what you will do to install OTA.

Download the OTA ZIP (and also previous version’s ROM ZIP if your device is rooted), and then copy the file(s) to your OnePlus 3.

Next, reboot the device into recovery mode. For that, power off, and when screen is off, press and hold Volume down + Power button together until you see anything on screen.

Next, choose ‘Install from local’ to install the ROM/OTA file. If you are rooted, install the ROM file of previous version first, following by installation of latest version’s OTA file. If you are not rooted, simply install the OTA file directly, you don’t need to install ROM file.

That’s it, the latest update will be installed soon, just restart the device using ‘Reboot’ option. Give your OnePlus 3 some time to reboot.
