Google Calendar App from the Play Store now, only Android 4.0+ devices eligible

Google has released the official Google Calendar app on the Play store. The native Google Calendar app was previously available only on select Android devices such as Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus as the default calendar app. Now that it is out on the Play store,  users with OEM customised devices – read non-Nexus devices, can also download and use the Google Calendar app.

The app also comes with a few nice extras thrown in my Google, like:

  • Snooze events directly from the notification
  • Pinch to Zoom support
  • Set a home time zone
  • Auto-send predefined messages to event participants
  • Expanded sync period, allowing past events from upto one year

There is a small catch though; the Google Calendar standalone app will only work on Android devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or higher. So if you are using an older legacy device which cannot be upgraded to Android 4.0 at least, you’re out of luck and will have t stick to the default calendar app on your device.

Also, according to Google, HTC devices have been known to have several known issues with this app. So HTC users downloading this app should expect some issues.

For those of you who are already on Ice Cream Sandwich or Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, you can download the Google Calendar app for free from the Google Play Store. Earlier today, Google also updated the Play Store with Wish Lists, and now you can bookmark apps for review at a later stage
