One of the best features of CyanogenMod 7, aka CM7 ROMs was the inbuilt T-mobile theme engine, which made the process of installing custom themes a breeze, instead of the more tedious method of using Clockworkmod recovery for doing so. A huge amount of free and paid themes were available for CM7, and could be used on any device running CM7. However, when work started on bringing out CyanogenMod 9 (CM9) based on Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0, the good old theme engine was nowhere to be found.
But that has changed now, as the latest build of CM9 saw the theme engine being added to it, and has also made its way to AOKP ROM (which is based on CM9). And themes for the theme engine have already started coming out. The most notable ones out right now are the Dark Ice, ICS Green, and Black Exodus themes.
Let’s take a look at how the themes can be applied, provided you are running the latest CM9/AOKP ROM on your phone:
- Download the theme you want to try out, from the links above (click on the names of themes above).
- Copy the .apk file that you download to your phone’s SD card.
- Install them on the phone by clicking on them in a file manager.
- Then, open the Themes/Theme Manager app on the phone, then simply scroll to the theme and click the Apply button.
That’s it, the theme you’ve chosen will be applied to the phone. Of course, themes at this point are not fully complete, so you may see a few unthemed elements in the ROM as well after applying the theme, but that should be rectified soon as the themes mature.
Have you tried out the Theme Manager and themes available for CM9/AOKP yet? Let us know in the comments.
