Asus has partnered with Google in its Project Tango endeavor to bring augmented reality (AR) to the consumer public, but projects don’t make an impact on the world if they remain mere projects. At some point, AR devices have to arrive in retail stores for consumers to try, and in countries where consumers can try them before they buy them.
The Asus ZenFone AR cleared the FCC in the US back in March and is headed to the US this summer in the flesh, but the US won’t be the only country graced with the AR-enabled device. A new report says that the Asus ZenFone AR will launch in Taiwan on June 14th, confirmed by way of media invitations to the event.
The Asus ZenFone AR features a 5.7-inch, WQHD display with Qualcomm’s quad-core Snapdragon 821 SoC with a 3,300mAh battery. The ZenFone AR is said to come in both 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM variants, with the US likely receiving the 6GB RAM variant and Taiwan and other places getting the 8GB RAM variant.
The Asus ZenFone AR is the world’s first smartphone to come with both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality support (VR), both from Google, but it was not the first to have Daydream VR support (that position belongs to the Lenovo PhabPro 2). The reason behind bringing Asus ZenFone AR to the market is that the PhabPro 2 did not have enough apps and that the Tango apps used did not run smoothly on the PhabPro 2. The issues are ironed out with the ZenFone AR, making it the AR/VR-enabled device to bring some success to Google’s agenda.
The Asus ZenFone AR will launch on Verizon in the US, with no word on other carrier launches in other countries.
