Known Bugs/Issues:

(As of December 15, 2013)

  • No issues reported yet.

Let’s see how to install the Android 4.4 KitKat on your Asus Transformer Pad TF300T.

WARNING!

Warranty may be void of your device if you follow the procedures given on this page.

You only are responsible for your device. We won’t be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

CHECK DEVICE MODEL NO.

To make sure your device is eligible with this, you must first confirm its model no. in ‘About device’ option under Settings. Another way to confirm model no. is by looking for it on the packaging box of your device. It must be TF300T!

Do not use the procedures discussed here on any other device of Samsung or any other company. You have been warned!

BEFORE YOU BEGIN..

You must do this pre-installation stuff before attempting to install the ROM on your Asus Transformer Pad TF300T in order to avoid any complications later, and have a smooth and successful process.

GET ANDROID 4.2 BOOTLOADER FIRST!

You need to install Android 4.2 update from Asus to get Android 4.2 bootloaders, which is a must for this Android 4.4 KitKat update to work on your Transformer Pad TF300T tablet. If you have updated with Asus’ own Android 4.2 update in the past, you don’t need to do it now.

So, make sure that before installing the Android 4.4 based ROM here, you have installed Android 4.2 update from Asus once in your tablet’s life so far.

MAKE SURE YOUR DEVICE BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED!

You will need to have an unlocked bootloader as you will be flashing a recovery first — even if you have cwm/twrp recovery already. So, if you haven’t unlocked bootloader of your Asus Transformer TF300T before, do it now. And if you had re-locked it after doing your part of hacks and all, it’s time to unlock it again.

GET CWM/TWRP RECOVERY

You need to have any version of custom recovery, either ClockworkMod (CWM) or TWRO, installed on your Transfrmer Pad TF300T before beginning with the installation guide below.

As you will be installing a new recovery before installing the ROM, any version of your current recovery would do just fine.

To install any old recovery for now, you can use this page here →

BACK UP YOUR DEVICE

Back up important data and stuff before you start playing around here as there are chances you might lose your apps and app-data (app settings, game progress, etc.), and in rare case, files on the internal memory, too.

For help on Backup and Restore, check out our exclusive page on that linked right below.

ANDROID BACK UP AND RESTORE GUIDE: APPS AND TIPS

CHARGE YOUR DEVICE

If your android device powers off due to lack of battery while the process is underway, it could damage the device.

So, make sure your device is adequately charged — at least 50% battery of the device.

EXAMPLE VIDEO

If you haven’t used a custom recovery, either CWM or TWRP, before, to install a .zip file of a ROM on anything else, then we suggest you first watch a video of that, given right below, to get familiar with the process.

Just fyi, the video below shows installing a .zip file (of recovery) on Galaxy S3, but it doesn’t matter as the process remains exactly same. So, once you are finished with video, jump to downloads and step-by-step guide below.

Install ClockworkMod Recovery using another custom recovery

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

Reminder: Make sure that you’ve got the following before attempting to install the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update on your Transformer Pad TF300T, as we said in in ‘Before you begin..‘ section above:

  • You have the Android 4.2 Bootloader
  • You have unlocked bootloader of your tablet
  • You have got either of cwm/twrp recovery

Only after you satisfy the above 3 conditions, you shall begin with the guide below.

If you got CWM recovery right now, follow the CWM guide below, otherwise TWRP recovery guide right below the CWM recovery guide.

GUIDE FOR CWM RECOVERY USERS
  1. Boot into Recovery mode. For this:
    • Power off your device and wait for 5-10 seconds until the device is fully switched off.
    • Press and hold Volume Down and Power button together.
    • Now, if you are on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS, you will be asked to press Volume Up to enter RCK. basically, RCK means Recovery. So, just hit Volume Up now.
    • And if you are on Android 4.1/4.2 Jelly Bean, you will need to press Volume Down until you see RCK option selected, and then press Volume Up to boot into recovery mode.
└ In Recovery mode, use Volume buttons to navigate Up and Down between options and use Power button to select an option.
  2. Create a Nandroid Backup from recovery. It’s optional but very important to do, so that in case something goes wrong you can restore to current status easily. For making a Nandroid Backup, go to Backup And Restore » Backup.
  3. Perform a Factory Reset (This will delete all apps and their settings and game progress). For this:
    • Select Wipe data/Factory reset, then select Yes on the next screen to confirm factory reset (screenshot)
  4. Install the KitKat TWRP Recovery file first that you downloaded above:
    • Select Install zip » Choose zip from sdcard (or external sdcard, you know where your files are) » browse to the location where you saved all the files and select the KitKat TWRP Recovery file (DON’T select ROM file or Gapps file!)
How to Flash File in CWM Recovery
  5. Reboot your device. For this, go back to the main menu of recovery and select reboot system now.
  6. Now, boot into Recovery mode again as you did in Step 1 above. You will see the new recovery. Now follow the guide before titled “GUIDE FOR TWRP RECOVERY USERS” below, from step 7, as you already have the KitKat recovery installed. So, you need to install the ROM file, and the Gapps file now, and you’re done. If you wish to Root your Asus Transformer Pad TF300T on Android 4.4 KitKat, then do the step 10 also.

That’s all. Your phone will now reboot and it will take some time as it’ll be phone’s first boot after installing Android 4.4, be extremely excited for this!

Note: In case your device gets bootloop (stuck at logo while rebooting), just do a factory reset (step 3) and you will be fine.

  4. Hi, Cant install the KitKat Twrp recovery zip file. It fails. Say failed. I have twrp V2.6.3.0 already installed. Now cant go back and install the backup file I made. Ant help given greatly appreciated.
Boot loader unlocked and I was rooted before the factory reset part of the process and cant root again for some reason. Tablet is also no longer seen in windows.

    1. Finally resolved it. 2 issues first cleared was a corrupted Micro SD card, Then finally started again and at the point of installing the TWRP-KITKAT file on reboot I went through “System” but in that golden moment between shut-down and re-boot I entered the recovery option. Finally let me then install the Omni 20131230 nightly build, works like a treat with the following exceptions which I think are already documented.

      1. No home keys (Top row) when docked. (Half work)
      2. No access to Dock SD or USB port.
      3. No second battery icon when docked

Tips: MicroSD card in tablet/screen need to be formatted as FAT32 otherwise wont show in file manager

Q1 – Do we have any idea when the Dock will be better supported.

Q2 – Does installing a later “nightly” mean I have to completely reset set up my apps etc or will this not be affected.

Q3 – Even though I used TWRP to create a recovery for the love of God this would not install, really thought I had bricked it.

  5. Hi. I tried getting the Boot Unlock app from the ASUS download site, and it doesn’t seem to be there anymore (nor the option to download any TF300T utilities). Can anyone point to the location of the app, or anyway to unlock the bootloader. Thanks

  16. Does it support the Keyboard Docking Station, also does it support the Connect Dock? I have both and I don’t want to loose it support after upgrade to 4.4

    1. I’ll try it with my keyboard dock in about half an hour I’m getting it. I’ll let you know

    2. yeah all works

    3. Just successfully installed 4.4 as per above, but have dock issues. The Keyboard works, usb port works, and the tablet charges through the charging port on the dock, but the tablet doesn’t register when the dock is attached, and the dock doesn’t charge the tablet without the dock plugged into the charger. Any ideas?

  22. Hi! I have an ASUS tf300t and it is updated to the newest version of Android by Asus. I think it is 10.6.27.5. I’ve read in many posts and forums that we can’t unlock the bootloader, root it and flash recoveries with this version. Can anyone tell me how to do it with this version and with no bricks?
    Thanks.

    1. You can do all of that. I have a tf300t 10.6.275. I initially had it rooted without unlocking the bootloader (using kingo root; moto and framaroot didn’t work). Then I wanted to upgrade to 4.4 using the omnirom method above, so I unlocked it with no problems using the tool on the Asus support page. I ran the procedure above with TWRP, including re-rooting, and am now running fine on omnirom 4.4.

    2. Thanks but I was able to do everything some days ago.
