Android powered Micromax 4K TV launched in India, priced INR 39,990 ($640)

After several groundbreaking successes in the smartphone market, Micromax has decided to expand the range of its products by moving into the Smart TV sector. The Indian manufacturer surprised everyone when it choose Thursday to announce two brand new 4K televisions straight out of the blue. The Ultra HD televisions are available in two differently sized variants of 42 and 49 inches respectively.

Speaking of the announcement Rajesh Agarwal, Co- Founder, Micromax Informatics said “It is our constant endeavor to bring alive the best experience and connectivity through our multiple screens. Today, we are revolutionizing the home entertainment experience with the launch of our first 4K-UHD television range. The new range targets the consumers who want a larger than life experience and desire to access smart android content on a bigger, sharper, crystal clear screen. We are committed to grow this category further and consolidate our position in the television segment in India.”

The 49 inch television (model number: 50K2330UHD), which is expected to be a viewers delight with its 3840×2160 pixel display panel comes compounded with 178-degree viewing angles. The device runs Android 4.4 KitKat with several pre-loaded apps including the Play Store. Micromax has also added the TV mirroring feature which allows for seamless integration between your smartphone and TV.

For connectivity, there are 3 USB ports, 2 HDMI ports and  one headphone port. The device can both connect to the wi-fi and act as a hotspot once you connect it to the telephone cable. Inside the device, there is 1 GB RAM and 2.5 GB of ROM worked by a dual core processor while the graphics are catered to by a quad core GPU. The whole package comes with a price tag of 49,990 and once you stop to compare it with other LED’s of the same size, the price is astonishingly reasonable.

Moving to the 42 inch variant (model number: 50K2330UHD), — which is about 10k lighter on the pockets — the specs are similar to the 49 inch one with a few differences. It uses the Android Jelly-bean for one and the quad core GPU has been replaced by a dual core. Also — and this is truly surprising — Micromax has upgraded the 1 GB RAM from the 49 inch version to 2 GB for this device. While we are far from complaining, the logic behind this “upgrade” has defied all our attempts at understanding. Oh, and there is an extra HDMI port as well.

For now, Micromax’s smart televisions are available only online and can be bought from e-retailer Flipkart with a 1 year warranty.

Well, while no one expected smart TV prices to drop this low quit this early, Micromax by pricing these devices on par with normal LEDs of the same size, may just have ushered in a new era in which all the “Idiot Boxes” are Smart.
