Android may soon let you “drag-and-drop” stuff between apps

Google might soon implement a cool feature to Android which will bring ‘drag-and-drop’ support to your smartphone. Google has received a patent for ‘Drag and Drop’ feature which will enhance the UX for Android users.

This ‘Drag and Drop’ feature, which is yet to be implemented, will come with support for text, images, video files and even work between applications as well. It will let you select an object and directly drag it to the place you want, saving you the time and energy presently required to mark, copy and then paste a text from one location to another in your phone.

Once the new feature comes to Android phones, all you will need to do, to copy a phone number from your browser to your dialer, just mark the text and drag it to your dialing app.

Also, according to the patent, the ‘drag-and-drop’ feature will also make your task easier by suggesting the applications where you can drop the content you have dragged. If an image is chosen to be dragged, the feature will automatically show those apps that can accept an image as an input, for example messaging apps such as Snapchat and photo editing apps.

This feature can also be used with Google Assistant to make the experience richer. But as of now, Google has not specified when it plans to roll out the ‘drag and drop’ feature to Android phones. And whether it ever intends to release it at all. After all, patents remaining on paper and never making to the market is not en entirely new thing, isn’t it?

  1. Omg yesss, a feature that I always wanted with their mobile Chrome browser. It make things easier now. I also would like if they support the pop-up browser feature for phones that supports it like Samsung S6 and others. First, ad-block feature, now drag and drop feature. Great job, Google!

  2. That’s a very smart and much needed feature :D. This’ll make one handed usage a piece of cake for people now.The feature that shows the apps which can use the pictures is also very cool and doesn’t make the process tedious.Although its too early to say I’m guessing that this feature will have a lot more functions .

  3. you have used whatafuture image without any backlink

  4. awesome feature!! can’t wait t try it!! hope they launch it soon!!

  5. Appreciate you add WhataFuture, but I think you did a mistake in link forwording on WhataFuture anchor text.

  6. The potential possibilities with this feature is endless. I am supposing or hoping this feature makes it to the developer previews of android o in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed.
Anyway, glad to see such major changes or rather process in the functional capabilities of a phone. These changes will modify the way we use phones for the good and make it a lot more efficient.

    1. Just think of the possibilities! transferring data and so much.It will make lots of things less time consuming especially googling and searching which I believe is the simplest of its capabilities as it could do much more

      1. Agreed. things like this will take androids functionality levels miles ahead of apple or any other OS
