Android 2.3 Gingerbread for Motorola Droid

motorola droid android 2.3 gingerbread

The earliest rumors of the Gingerbread told us a thing that android 2.3 would have a minimum requirement of 1GHz, which broke many Droid 1 souls. But here we are, it’s confirmed that android 2.3 isn’t married to 1GHz only sort of beliefs and in fact, we’ve already discovered the custom ROMs for the original Droid running Gingerbread, ported from the AOSP release.

The ROMs cannot be said to be mature enough to replace your current ROM, but for what it’s worth, you MAY actually want to try it on your Droid.

We spotted 2 ROMs, one w/o Google Apps (ROM 1) and the other with Google Apps (ROM 2), but based on the first one only.

Note that these ROMs are meant only for the original Droid. (No Milestone queries, please!)

ROM 1: Browser keeps force closing and Camera doesn’t work.

Developer – neubanks89, without Google Apps

Download:  gingerbread_sholes.zip (http://www.multiupload.com/IV8WO2ZT2I)

Instructions:

  1. Download the file “gingerbread_sholes.zip” from the above link
  2. Boot your phone into recovery
  3. Make a backup first (very much recommended)
  4. Do a factory reset by wiping the data
  5. Install from the zip file you downloaded
  6. That’s it. Reboot and Enjoy!

OR, try this ROM!

ROM 2: More refined form of ROM 1. Camera works and browser works good on Wi-Fi, but crashes on 3G. Accelerometer doesn’t work and you can’t mount the SD Card too.

Developer – steinman, nandroid with Google Apps

Download: Gingerbread-4-OG-Droid.zip (http://www.mediafire.com/?bz4l5nsisn4ifbj)

Instructions:

  1. Download the file “Gingerbread-4-OG-Droid.zip” from the above link
  2. Extract the file and move the folder to /clockwork/backup
  3. Now, boot into recovery to make current ROM’s backup
  4. Do a factory reset by wiping out data
  5. Now, to install the new ROM, restore the ROM you put in the backup folder in Step 2. Go to “backup and restore” in recovery and then select Restore
  6. Choose the folder (from Step 2) in the backup
  7. That’s it. Enjoy!

Let us know how blazing fast your Droid has gone? And how crazy you’ve gone too? We expect the fully featured ROMs to break soon on the Internet and will be there to get it you. Keep watching this space.

  1. Its awesome some force closing but im sure once it is stable it gonna be amazing. Only thing I would say is get some of the customizing feature like shadowrom and it would be perfect. Very smooth and very quick. Will hopefully download this again when its final.

    1. Gingerbread has brought many under-the-hood changes and improvements that will definitely make any device it’s installed on, fast and more fast. it’s incredible that android 2.3 runs on Droid’s 600 MHz processor that nice.

I’ll update this post with more good ROMs as they come including updating this ROM too. Kudos to Developers!

  3. Im lost…. i downloaded but dont know how to install it on my droid.

    1. Which One have you downloaded. The first ROM or the Second ROM? Make sure you’ve ROM manager installed on your Droid — search for it in the android market, it’s free. Then, open the ROM Manager and flash clockwork recovery. After that, backup our ROM too.

And let us know where you’re stuck btw, have you already applied the ROM?

  5. Is Android 2.3 will work on Motorola Droid 1? When is it going to be out? I just got Android 2.2.2 update but there is not enough information on this update.

    1. There really is no date for android 2.3 for Droid 1. Heck! There is no such date for any phone, except a rumored march end date for Galaxy S…. I guess you’ll have to wait… and btw, Droid X and Droid 2 are in line too, ahead of the Droid 1.
